Mavis Beacon is good software. I recommend it! I learned in high school on a manual typewriter, but I imagine that nobody has them anymore.

I took a 9-week long class back in middle school. The teacher covered all of the keys and numbers and we used typewriters so that every mistake we made showed. We were taught the official way, with your hands starting out on the "home keys."

I learned how to type on an upright typewriter with all my fingers on the keyboard. Sounds strange, but my teacher would have us type to the sound of music. It seemed to relax us, take our minds off the actual typing (sort of putting our minds on auto pilot), and the beat dictated our typing speed.
But that was in the 60's. What did we know then?

A long time ago in High School where they would put a cover over the keyboard so you couldn't see the keys.

I learned from a cd. "Typing tutor platinum" to be exact where they basically go over each row and you type everything thats on the screen until you memorize it. I used this for about 6 months. They also have games on the side to keep it from getting boring as well.

my highschool required you to take a keyboarding class freshman year. I failed it. I think by the end of the year my average typing speed was about 13 words per minute. Thanks to instant messaging I actually type quite a bit faster now. I think I'm up to about 30 or 35 words a minute now
