Yes, but it's an average, and it varies somewhat by breed also. A dog that is 2 years old is equivalent in age to a young adult human (mid to late teens) A dog that is 7 years old is equivalent to someone around 50, and the ratio continues to decline slightly after that.

I think the vet you worked for already gave you the answer, so I'm not sure why you're asking it here.
It is a generalization. Dogs have different life expectancies depending on breed. Great Danes live to be 6-8 yrs generally. My Siberian Husky has an average age of around 12-14. Some dogs live to be 18-20. Obviously, this generalization of 7/1 doesn't work for every breed for their entire life span.

Dogs on average live to 15 years, some to 20 years, people live on average to age 73 some over 100, due the math. The average is 7 years after the dog is an adult dog.

Technically - - - -It takes a year for the Earth to circumnavigate the sun. Unless it does that seven times a year for dogs, how can that be?
Different species all have different life spans. I could never figure out why we don't just say the average life span of a particular animal is such & so & let it go at that

Totally true, my dog recently died, 3 months ago, it was 12 years old, just 4 less than me, and it looked logically a lot older, it was 84 actually, and it died of a heart attack.
All this can be proved just by looking at the animal's growth and development, its characteristics. When dogs are 8 or 9 years old, they already start to look tired and old. Mine had even gray hairs! 'Cause it was black haired originally of course.

many people think that witch is why they live to only about to the regular 14 human years or so but there have been dogs that have lived much longer so it might depend on the dogs size

actually its just that for every one year that we age its as though a dog has aged seven years. Thats why some types of dogs seem to age really fast

I'd say he knows....
I've read that it varies by breed, but that it is approximately that ratio.
