No --- there are four quarts in a gallon.
Quart is from the word quarter.

2 cups in a pint, 2 pints in a quart and 4 quarts in a gallon.

Concur with four quarts to one gallon. Don't feel dumb though British Measurements, as they are called are awkward and arbitrary at times.
