these are the max speeds allowed in lower gears 1st. 50 kph , 2nd 100kph, 3rd 180 kph. if you compare tach readings at these points with kilowatt bar graph you will note that the kph limits are right at the peak of the kiolwatt curve[ or horsepower curve if non metric]

The speeds translate to about 30,60,&90 MPH, which are pretty common speed limits. They are also spaced at regular intervals in the dial (if there is a dial) suggesting cosmetic reasons.
