I am assuming that you really mean sweet potato rather than yam since it is almost Thanksgiving and that it a traditional food. A yam is actually a starchy veg. from regions in Africa and we are not likely to find them here in the US.
I think it all started with some advertising screw-up many years ago and now the two names are used interchangably. Google "candied yam recipe" and see how many hits you get. Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, there are several ways to cook yams. One way is to boil them in water until they are soft, but not TOO soft. You wanna have them soft but avoid making it mushy or else it will have the texture of baby food. Another way is to bake them in the oven for 325-350 degrees. There is one tasty tip that you may use for yams too. Place marshmallows(mini ones) on top of a bowl of mashed yams. Ok, I guess that's the ONLY time you could mash them......... = )

You put a slit lengthwise through the yams and bake them in a buttered cookie sheet until they are soft. They carmelize as they cook. They will taste fantastic.

Fresh yams:
wash, bake with peels on,
split like a baked potato/add butter and brown sugar
Or fresh yams: peel , slice sorta chunky, add butter, brown sugar, nutmeg and cinnamon, bake for 1 hour, add marsh mellow topping or real large or small marsh mellows and bake for 10 minutes until the marsh mellows melt and are slightly brown.
Also fast easy way.......10 minutes!
Buy canned yams with heavy syrup/ toss on the marsh mellows and bake 10 minutes!

I poke a hole in them, then stick them in the microwave. If it's just me, I eat it like a regular baked potato (just a little butter on it). If I'm getting fancy, I bake them, then mash them with brown sugar, cinammon, and butter.
