Most belief systems or religions which believe at least they are offering what the person needs, would be concerned at a member moving into another religion or belief system. However if love and respect are an important part of the belief system, its members, while expressing concern, will not try to stand in the way of a member moving out and going into something else.
However when love and respect are not at a premium, and especially when that system is associated in its members minds with a certain nationality, or race, then the reaction can be much stronger. It can be seeing as a betrayal of the nation, of the family, etc. There was a time when this was the case for Roman Catholics in Quebec, and more recently in Spain, but that has changed radically today, and many priests will say: "Let them be..." and actually defend the rights of members of their flock to convert outside of their religion.
Muslims are closely associated with all Arabs, as well as some other nations or people groups (for instance, Iran is not Arab). Such a close association in people's minds might well cause a tendancy to feel one of their people has no right to leave their religion.

This is how your question should read: "Can a Muslim convert into another religion without being killed?" The answer is "not likely". Apostasy in Islam is punishable by death. In many Islamic countries this happens a lot to anyone who converts. That's why Iran has some of the highest execution rates per year in the world (look it up if you don't believe me). Read the Wikipedia article about it. The first line stated: "The four major Sunni and the one major Shia Madh'hab (schools of Islamic jurisprudence) agree that a sane adult male apostate must be executed." What a peaceful, tolerant religion, eh?

I think most religions proclaim that their way is the TRUTH and leaving their way is likely entering hell.

Islam insists that a person converts to Islam when marrying a person who is praticing the faith because of many issues.

I am Muslim and if I marry a man who does not convert than my marriage is not recognized under religion and it be the same as premartial sex when we consummate.

Its my responsibility to bring my children up as muslims and marrying another person of another faith will confuse my children which religion they chose to follow. The father will insist that the children follow his religion cause he believes if they don't they will end up in hell. Vice versa with me. And if my children are swayed to the other faith than the fault will be most likely mine and the sin ncreases when my decendents follow.
Not to mention since the marriage is not recognized, my children are considered illegitimate. The tension from these two issues alone will bring about social and family disturbances.

I believe there was once scene in desperate housewives when a mother wanted her gay son to turn back straight cause she's afraid hat he won't enter heaven.

Same here. Most religion believe that if you convert to another faith you won't enter heaven. And no matter what their religion is right and converting is wrong and still unacceptable. Its not only Islam sweetie. Just that probably Islam focuses on this issue and its consequences morethan other faiths.

Isn't it a sin in many religions to disbelieve the religion? I have a friend who was Buddhist and converted to Islam - her family didn't accept her choice at all because it was wrong in their view.

Of course, in Islam (like most religions) we believe that everyone has the right to choose their own paths, so everyone is allowed to choose their own religion. But that doesn't make everything right, including disbelieving in Islam (from the religious perspective).

No because if a Muslim leaves Islam than that person will be leaving the religion of ALLAH and will face an eternity in Hell.

picture it as a person has a cancer and he needs to cut off part of his body to stop the cancer from spreading into the rest of the body. and he won't mind because he knows that this thing is good for him.
it is the same thing in Islam when a person tries to leave the religion he is harming everybody so he/she should be cut off so the rest would stay healthy.
