If he is near Camp Victory in Baghdad (Or maybe the IZ in downtown Baghdad, but I've never been there so I'm not sure) he'll have to buy a cell phone from the bazaar near the px and the cards from the px.Baghdad has the best service.I'm not sure about anywhere else.I'm in Ramadi currently, and unless I can get a sim card for my phone it doesn't work out here. And even if I had a card I couldn't buy the cards because our Px doesn't sell them to my knowledge.

Otherwise the phone he has from the states won't work.

Just send him regular phone cards and he can use the at&t calling centers.Or he may have access to a DSN line.DSN lines are military lines that he can call you from but you cannot call from an outside line.

Cell service is very expensive and the you can't get a signal half the time. Calling cards are the absolute best way to go. They can't have cell-phones on them in the field anyway (security issues). My husband looked into cell phone service before he left the last time and it was absolutely outrageous.

They do have some kind of cell phone serivice over there but it is not worth the money. Just get your husband some calling cards, they are cheap and it's a lot better than dealing with some way over priced cell phone.

Go to www.wikipedia.com and look up mobile phones and what frequencies they operate on in the Middle East. There's not much sense in sending him a cellphone designed for N. American use if it can't catch any waves in Iraq.

Here's a quote: "All European nations and most Asian and African nations have adopted GSM. In other countries, such as the United States, Australia, Japan, and South Korea, legislation does not require any particular standard, and GSM coexists with other standards, such as CDMA and iDEN."

If y'all have cell phones, you might want to see what your provider says about usage. I know they can get cell phones over there, but it would be an Iraq cell phone.

My son-in-law just returned from Iraq. He and my daughter talked
on their cell phones several times a week.

Have you tried the Red Cross? Perhaps even look for something ran by military wifes. Fort Bliss, TX deploys a lot of soldiers.
