.An Eye Stye is a common infection of the hair follicle of an eyelash, resembling a sore similar to a boil or a pimple in the gland at the edge of the eyelid which leads to blockage of the hair follicles that may become swollen, nuisance and painful to the touch.

i've had them before, u can get them from like using someone elses eye makeup, which a couple days ago i used my moms mascara since i couldnt find mine.. but anyways....i see the tiny little dot thing, ive had an eyelash in it last time i had one and i just plucked it out, but this time its by itself. how can i get it to go away, i just started feeling it hurting this afternoon. if anyone knows or can give me some ideas it would be great. thanks!

Treatment options
Styes can be painful and very irritating. Hot 'compresses' can help relieve the pain and may also help to get rid of the infection. For many centuries, it has been believed that hot compresses'draw out infections'. A hot compress is a piece of material (such as cotton balls), which is heated in hot water. It needs to be as hot as the person can manage comfortably, without being so hot as to burn the skin. It is probably best that the person with the stye manages this, to keep the risk of a burn low. The hot, wet material is placed on the eyelid for several minutes, until it cools, then it is replaced with another compress. This is done several times a day. Paracetamol will also help relieve the pain of a stye.

Sometimes, antibiotic ointments may be needed and, occasionally, the person will need oral antibiotics (taken by mouth). In some cases, a stye will need to be opened up (lanced) by a doctor, if the stye does not get better by itself. If the lump is still painful and hot after a few days, get your doctor to check your eye.

Warning – do not squeeze a stye
Do not try to squeeze the pus out of a stye. If the stye is not ready to burst, the infected pus may be squeezed into the tissue next to the stye, causing the infection to spread further.

Preventing spread of infection
Suggestions to prevent the spread of infection include:
Don't touch, rub or squeeze the stye.
Dispose of a used'compress' in a rubbish bin, so that others do not have to handle it.
Wash your hands frequently.

My gram always used a hot tea bag, and held it over her eye 15 minutes or so several times a day. This draws out the infection. Your doc can prescribe an antibiotic ointment if it doesn't go away within a week, and if that doesn't clear it up then it will have to be lanced. HOWEVER, most clear up without incident. A stye is caused by clogged glands on your eyelids. You can prevent them by washing your eyelids with johnson's and johnson's no tears shampoo. Take a warm damp washcloth and gently rub the edge of your lid, at the base of your eyelashes. Btw Tricia, most stye's go away within 3 days, so your answer cracked me up!

A stye as you say, results from infection, it would be very unwise to 'pop it like a pimple' ,.unfortunately, like all infections, it will take its time . To ease the discomfort, try bathing it with cotton wool soaked in as hot a water as you can bear. Just hold the hot pad on it for as long as you can. Dont know where you are living, but our Chemists stock the old favourite of long ago called "Golden Eye Ointment" its not very expensive, and will help to clear it up quickly.Bathe the eye (as above) then smear a little on the stye.Do it at least 3 times a day.

You have to put hot compresses on the eye several times a day with a very clean facecloth. Avoid wearing makeup at all or contacts until condition gets better. Sometimes they get infected and you end up needing eye ointment or eye drops from the doctor. Take note if you see any pink in the white of your eye go to a doctor right away. Sorry to hear that you have that! I hope it goes away soon! :)
