First off, CONGRATULATIONS on the little bambino. I've got 3 of my own (now 5, 7, & 9) and they just keep getting more amazing everyday.
Second, you have an excellent idea. I've made a few slideshows w/music and you can put out some pretty amazing things relatively easily. From experience, spend time picking out the right music. It has to have the right "feel" not just the right words.

Here are some options for your consideration:

If you're using an apple:
- use iMovie. It's free, easy-to-use, and good. Period.

If you're using MS Windows here are four options:

1) Windows Movie Maker.
If you have Windows XP, you likely already have it on your system. It's not the most user friendly, or robust, but it'll get the job done, is free, and you probably already have it.

2) Picassa2
An excellent photo editing pkg for it's price--free (at http://picasa.google.com/) but for slideshows you can't do pan and zooms, titles, or music. So get it for the photo editing, but use something else for all but basic slideshows.

3) MS Photo Story 3
Also free (from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/photostory/default.mspx). Allows pan & zooms, titles, narration, and music. Somewhat user friendly. A good choice for beginner's.

4) Adobe Photoshop
What I use. Full featured and more user friendly but more expensive ($80 - $130 depending on which version you get). I'm using PS Elements 4.0 which still has a few minor bugs, but hopefully are fixed with the newest version. You can compare their versions here (http://www.adobe.com/products/psprelements/pdfs/comparison_chart.pdf)

I know there are more out there, but these are the ones I have experience with. All of the ones above will output a file that are playable on most all computers (usually .wmv, .mov, or .mpg files) so, for example, you won't need to have Photo Story installed to play videos that you created in Photo Story.

Oh, and make sure you pick a song you like to hear...as you do your editing and proofing you'll be hearing it alot!

Enjoy!

you can use the Microsoft Powerpoint or the Movie Maker..

but if you like the special way,you can make a good one by using the Swishmax software that can be downloaded at download.com..the only disadvantage of it is the portability of the file..it's file extension is .swf..anyway that swf file can be uploaded in the internet easily which makes it very cool..
