While this has been true, I think recent dialogues are changing the common perception. It would be interesting to see how the issue changes in poll results, now that Sam Harris' and Richard Dawkins' books are out and receiving such positive press.

I disagree I am an Atheist and I don't feel at all or am I treated like a least American. If you are treated like a least American it is for some other reason than Atheism. And all the groups you named why should any of them be considered less American. I believe you are just prejudicial. The only problem is you seem to be prejudicial against your own belief. I think you are having doubts about your belief. Get a grip you are right in your belief just wrong about being a lesser American. God bless kisses Betty.

Perhaps because the inalienable rights we believe in granted by GOD are a problem for the atheist. He doesnt believe in God therefore how can he possibly believe in the inalienable rights the Declaration of Independence suggests we have? If there is no God, there are no such things as objective morality and inalienable rights.
Likewise most atheists (especially on here) would like to see Christianity abolished which would violate the constitution. Atheism has fundamental flaws that make it incompatible with what we believe as Americans about liberty and the nature of our existence.

Because Atheism is the easiest least bothersome state, believe nothing therefore be responsible for nothing.
They can commit the most heinous crimes and not having to feel the slightest remorse. Simple, right?

I don't view atheists as being "Unamerican." I do think think many atheists tend to say and do things which alarm many of those in America- such as try to take "In God we Trust" off of coins or remove "Under God" from the pledge.

Viewed by whom? I don't see atheism as unAmerican. I do, however, see conservative Christianity as uniquely American. We house religious extremists of Christianity in much the same ways that other countries house extremists of Islam.

Speaking as a Muslim - it's simply because we believe differently and our beliefs are our lives - meaning we eat, drink, dress, and live every single part of our lives according to our religion. Lots of people just can't deal with that.

"For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God." - Romans 3:23. Atheists just don't seem to get that. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I don't believe that is true, the subject of Atheism does not come up unless you bring it up. I never know when I am talking to an atheist, unless they disclose it themselves.

American means citizenship of our country. Many other people have determined other meanings.....but they are just opinions, and not the true meaning of the word.
