The us average is 678 but I've seen people get home loans with as low as 579. (subprime lender) c level credit is 580 and above b level is 620 and above and a credit is 670 and higher.

a good credit score is between 700-800 - depending on the high being 800 or 900. To purchase a house, generally they only look at the last two years of activity.
Inquires also impact your score, generally, you shouldn't apply more than three times a year for a new line of credit.
The longer you have a line of credit the better your score will be - everytime you make a payment, long term, it will go up. Also if you open a line and pay off other cards with that new line, it will increase.
Generally scores of 500 and less are bad, and need cosigners or co applicants. It takes about 2-3 years of solid payments and also check your credit annually at annualcreditreport.com. It is free and they have forms to dispute any information that isn't yours. Disputing is time consuming but well worth it. Sometimes you can dispute an item that is yours and get it removed b/c the creditor no longer has the paperwork and has to remove it by law if they can't substantiate the debt.

A "good" score is 620. To have a great score and qualify for prime rate, you want to be at 700 or higher.
