My 6year old G Shepherd has blocked anal glands and has been on antibios and has had cortizone anti-bio cream, he is all clear but I was just wondering if anyone has any tricks, dietry or otherwise to stop this happening again?

If you add fresh pumpkin (not the stuff for pies) into their food, it will harden the stool. Dogs need to have harder stools so that the anal glands will empty while having a poop. This doesn't always work however and you should learn how to express them yourself either by a vet or a groomer.

Feed him a tablespoon or two of bran every day. The bran going out stimulates the glands and helps keep them clean. Kellogg's All Bran cereal is one excellent, easily acquired, cheap source. You can mix it with his regular food, or he might just take it as a treat if he likes the flavor.
People I know who do this have gone from having to have their dogs' glands cleaned every time they were groomed (every 6 - 8 weeks) to not having to have the glands expressed at all for years.

The anal glands have to be evacuated. It is easy to so this and you can get the Vet to do it but you can learn to do it yourself and help the dog.
My dog has problems with this all the time. I am scared to hurt him so I have a friend who is a groomer who does it for me when I send him to be groomed but sometimes they are too impacted and I have to take him to the Vet to get them squeezed from the inside.

Have his anal glands expressed regularly. If this is something that is a routine problem for him, have your vet show you how to express his anal glands. It is also possible, in extreme cases, to have the anal glands completely removed. Talk to your vet.

there are some foods that you can purchase that are easier for dogs to digest therefore making their stool a consistency that is conducive to elimination. ask your vet for the best food for digestion. you may also have to continue having the glands expressed routinely as well, if not removed; although as i'm sure you could imagine would be somewhat costly as it would require surgery.

feed high quality pet food, stay away from the cheap stuff that is corn based. brands like nutro, solid gold, organix, purina proplan (not reg purina), natural balance are all good brands and sold at petco. also you can try mixing cooked oatmeal or brownrice to his food. this will give him lots of fiber and help empty his glands.

Take your dog to the vet, like once a month, or however often he needs it, to get them expressed. If he is having issued with this, once he gets better you should get them expressed on a regular basis, this should help so it doesn't happen again.
