Perhaps you can teach it to lie down (on their side). I've done that with my dog.
First, teach them to sit. Say "sit" repeatedly. Use your hand to force their butt down for a while until they get it. Once they perform the trick reward them with praise/treat.
Once they have "sit" mastere. Have them sitting and say "down" or "dead". Force them down.
Do this repeatedly.Depending on your dogs intellegence and how much you practice with him/her. They should learn the gist of it in months practising a couple times a week.

Get the dog to lay down and keep your hands on the dog making the dog stay still. Keep saying "play dead" then give the dog a treat and let him up. Keep doing this and the dog will catch on that he has to lay down to get the treat

My Granddaughter "shoots" her dog with her fingers and it falls flat onto it's belly and plays dead - no problem.
She just kept shooing it and pushing it down that he finally got the message and it is now part of his long list of tricks. It seem that kids are great teachers.
