They are talking if the draft is ever brought back, which as a Retired Senior Enlisted, I really doubt, it will include a section where schooling does not exempt anyone from the draft after they receive the degree they are presently enrolled in. In other words, you can only stay in college for so many years and you would still serve your time.
As to disagreeing, you can file as a conscientious objector, however read about those in IRAQ who have refused to return or go at all. They have been charged or will be charged and will face a Military Courts Martial which will ruin their life. For your information and that of other doubters, a Military Courts Martial carries the same weight as a Federal Court or State Court Conviction. You lose all rights and have a very hard time finding a decent job anywhere. Stop and think, is it really worth ruining your life. All wars are horrid and take many lives, however history has shown that most of them have been necessary to prevent a tyranny from taking over. What about Hitler in World War II? What would have happened had no one stopped him? What language do you think you would be speaking today?
Maybe you should read the lyrics to a song called: An Open Letter to My Teenage Son.
If the website does not work, simply go to any search engine: Type in Lyrics>An Open Letter To My Teenage Son and it will bring up the site for you. I read it again the other night and it still holds the same meaning as when the father recorded it.
To the Soldier who posted on here in reply to your question:
Take Care my Friend, there are those of us out there who support you and what you are doing. It is not an easy task when the one sided media posts the information they want the public to know.
Take Care and We Salute You Folks OVER THERE 100%.
A Retired Chief Petty Officer

The whole point of Charles Rangel bringing up the idea of a draft is this - if the threat to the country is that severe, then everyone should be involved in combatting it, such as the US did during World War II - the draft, Victory Gardens, goivernment rationing, etc.
He's making a point that if we want to send troops to a war, people back home should feel like they are in a war. Somebody else's kids should not be the only ones to fight to secure your security and somebody else's children and grandchildren should not pay the price to secure your safety now. It's called shared sacrifice.

You can be conscientious objector. Well, that used to be a possibility, but many conscientious objectors were experimented on. SO that might not be an option.
Another option is staying in a university until the "war" (occupation) is over. You can get multiple doctorate degrees in anything--you don't have to get a medical doctorate.
The best thing you can do to stop yourself from being drafted into a war that you do not agree with, is to take peaceful action against it. Join protesters. Write all your representatives. If you are too young to vote, you need to get those around you--who are old enough--to write their representatives.
If you do leave the country to avoid a war, you may not be able to come back for a few generations.
Hopefully the draft wont happen, but if it does, and we do enter a war that you do not agree with, your best bet is to stay in the university system.

Rangel is just politicking again with that draft thing, first of all.
And I attribute no noble reason for it, other than politicking against the President.
Hopefully, it will blow up in his face in 2008.
Meanwhile, if the guy does get the draft he says he wants for everybody's children, you (and maybe I) will have to go. It's called being an American.

Well, you would have to go to Canada! I believe in a person's right to refuse to go into combat in a war that he thinks is illegal!
Most would not I guess, but the rich kids and the Republican's should not be allowed to skirt the draft like Bush did! They should all go to Iraq!
I think 2 people in Congress have had kids in Iraq!

Do the crime, do the time. Don't forget, the law is always interpreted by the oppressor, so you can't win
Maybe practice singing "Oh, Canada"?
Or maybe become an illegal immigrant in Mexico?
OOPS. I almost forgot. What the Hell makes you think they are going to tell you the truth? They've been lying to the rest of us for years.

draft won't be re-instated because of sorry *** "I don't wanna go!" types like you
I personally would not want to have to serve with some sorry *** piece of **** who doesn't want to serve their country but only wants to take advantage of those who do then call them murderers and whatever
if you Do want to serve, you have my respect, but you don't have the luxury of where you want to go

That was the whole point of Rangel's call for a draft. No one cares about war now, because those who enlisted should have known it would come to this. They can't be called victims if they signed up for it. Or at least that's the mentality that we seem to have.
