Buddha taught a middle way. He had spent years trying various extreme methods of asceticism, then came to realize that his desires were what caused him to fail in reaching enlightenment. He taught that by following the 8-fold path, which is entirely a reasonable set of guidelines and not rigid rules, then people can gain peace of mind and happiness. Buddha's sacrifices of his family life and his wealth may have been a component of releasing his desires, but he taught that the extremes of his sacrifice were not necessary to achieve what he achieved.
