Oh, can I relate to this. My wife and I did sweat equity on our home and had to paint the entire house. First bit of advice - don't be cheap. Use the best quality primer and paint you can afford. There are alot of good brands out there but we found Benjamin Moore paints to work the best.
Secondly, use the proper latex paint for the areas you're working in. Kitchens and bathrooms must be washable. The rest of the house can be any type of latex you want.
Thirdly, Use the professional advice found at your dealer. Don't be afraid to explore different types of finishes. You can make stunning visual affects that will enhance your home.
Fourthly, ensure your colors compliment each other. Different colors and different shades of the same color can add a stricking look to your home.

Finally, have fun with it. We sure did and our house turned out absolutely fabulous!

There are really good paints made now especially for the kitchen and bathroom. They are a latex paint but dry harder like an oil paint. They are a little more expensive than regular paint but are totally worth it. I would go for a semi-gloss finish mainly because it stands up better to scrubbing and hides smudges and imperfections in the walls better. Everywhere else, a semi-gloss or even an eggshell (low gloss) finish will work well, all depending what kind of look you prefer. Hopefully you know what kind of paint is already on the wall. If it is an oil paint, (not likely if the house has been painted in the last 10 years) you will either have to stick with oil, prime with an oil primer and paint latex over top, or buy one of those expensive new latex paints that will go over anything ( probably still cost less than priming and painting.) Hope this helps. Whatever you decide, have fun!

When deciding to paint the bathroom, the best to use is a paint made for this purpose. For me, it was easiest to use all one brand of paint throughout my house.. For that I used Debbie Travis. Her line includes a special bathroom paint. Other than that, I would say use a type of paint that works well on your walls. Are your walls damaged, bumpy, or have flaws? Use a flat finish as it will help to minimize any surface imperfections. Also, determine whether the paint on your walls is oil or latex. You CANNOT paint latex over an oil surface. The best tip that I've read for this, is to buy a small jar of latex paint, and paint a small area of the wall. 24 hours later (after its had time to dry), try to scratch off the newly painted surface. If the new paint scratches off easily(using fingernails only), then the paint beneath is Oil.
Also, save money by avoiding primer. Primer is only really needed when you are working with a wall that is already dark, or on naked drywall. Also primer is needed if your wall is oil, and you wish to use a latex freshcoat.
Otherwise, simply just wash off any surface dirt from the wall, lay down some plastic, and paint away! Goodluck!

Satin finish (not too shiney - so wont show up dents etc in surface like gloss or semi gloss will). Latex would be best - Best to avoid the so called designer brands your paying for a name not a better paint. Personally i use Porter paint the only brand i wont use is Bher and im a professional painter.

Kitchen and Bathroom apply: Acrylic latex [Latex Enamel] in a semi-gloss sheen. You can have the paint tinted to the colour you desire. a tip for you is: If you are going to apply 2 coats of paint to either, room, You can buy primer and apply a first coat, half-tinted to the colour of that particular room, of the colour you will use to finish - coat it with. (Since you are using the primer coat, half-tinted, the cost of the primer is cheaper than paying for regular Acrylic latex paint and using it for the first coat.) For the second or final coat, apply the regular, Acrylic latex paint.

I am a pro. painter and what i always suggest is that if you have a lot of imperfections, use the lower sheen paints. This would be flat, velvet, satin. If you want scrubability you need a higher sheen. This would be eg-shell, semi-gloss and gloss. Eg-shell and velvet are the medium sheens and are the most versital. Good Painting and have fun!!!!

well depending on the room you would defintly use a latex paint. if you paint a living dining or bedroom i would paint it a eggshell or satin, so you could wash your walls..trim work a semi gloss. painting a kitchen or bath satin or semi gloss would be fine. for a good paint i use m.a.b or sherwin williams. hope it helps? dan (contractor)

Remove the doors and hardware, sand all the surfaces with 240 grit sandpaper, and wipe down with a tack-cloth. Then using a good quality brush, paint them in the color of your choise. There is a product called Flowtrol that helps eliminate brush marks. Talk to your paint supplier about how to mix it in. Good Luck
