I had my personal computer looked at by an IT guy at work a little while ago, and he uploaded an 'illegal' copy of windows xp on my computer. The automatic security updates ran through, and now everytime i log into my computer, it comes up with the warning that my copy is not genuine and do I want to 'Get Genuine' or 'Resolve Later'.
I have a genuine copy that I received with an old computer, a DELL computer, that says for distribution with a DELL PC only.
First question - will this still work OK on my HP computer?
Second question - how do I load this genuine copy on - do I have to remove EVERYTHING from my computer, and uninstall the windows, and then reinstall the genuine one?
Im not very computer savvy, but would like to do it myself if possible....

this is very similar to my case, i owned a HP desktop running a HP XP home version(original) and i later custom built the desktop. I was trying to have the computer boot up but it wouldn't allow it to.

my solution was to get a new hard drive and use my Dell XP home operating system on my HP, and without any problems it work great

Concusion: get a new hard drive( or wipe out the old operating system) and reboot your HP with the Dell operating disk

remember to backup all your files

right as you turn on your computer (after the files are backed up and you either have a new harddrive or wiped the old OS) put the genuine disk into the computer

The Dell disk, won't work on an HP machine. Your 4 choices are:

1. Find an HP install disk, backup everything and reinstall everything
2. Buy a copy of Windows XP, backup everything and reinstall everything
3. Download a free copy of Linux (I use Ubuntu)
4. Live with what you have including no further XP updates and no IE7

First, why would an IT guy knowingly download an illegal copy? He should know better and I sure wouldn't use him for anything again. I would reload the other win xp and try it. I had a Dell xp that worked just fine on an Activa computer, so it's not impossible. You don't need to remove everything, just reinstall over the existing copy.

As far as I know, copies of XP cannot be swapped between machines. So even though it is possible to get software that will allow you to change the licence key to the one on your Dell machine, it might not be accepted because it was previously registered to a Dell motherboard.

More importantly, what os did you have before the IT guy decided to install an illegal copy of XP?

You have to buy a new windows XP for your another computer. or else you have to try to install it by calling some professionals. But if you want so many genuine advantages, Get new windows XP from market. And the money will pay by that IT guy tell him to give you the bucks to buy a genuine copy or else complain Microsoft. Hope you will find him.

Microsoft has attacked you with it's WGA, Windows Genuine Advantage trojan horse. Unfortunately it is wrong 17% of the time. Do an internet search for removing WGA and get rid of the crap. Sometimes you can call the creeps at MS and if you complain enough they will give you instructiosn to remove it. NEVER NEVER NEVER download anything from Microsoft that in any way scans your computer the way WGA does. You can also contact Midge at techvillageonline@yahoo.com who has something that can solve your problem

more than likely, the "Dell" copy of xp will only load on a hard drive connected to a Dell motherboard. You will either need to buy a license for the copy you have, or buy another copy of xp.

forget it......Dell program work only on that type of dell.........it is impossible to just copy or boot up just the XP files. Dell will not work on a HP
Your best op is buy a windowsxp upgrade or get the HP program from HP.com
