Dip her hair in olive oil. I know it sounds gross, but imagine head lice, or oil in hair?

It works because the lice need clean hair to move around in and breath. If you dip your hair in olive oil, they can't breath. Plus, the eggs of the lice can't hatch because the oil is sticking it all down.

Oh, boy. I'm a mother -- I went through this when my kids were little, and a teacher -- go through this EVERY year with the kids at school. I've even gotten it once myself from students. (2nd graders need hugs, sometimes.) It is always at its worst after the kids have swimming because they all borrow each other's brush even when you tell them a hundred times not to. Girls are the ones that usually get it. Boys not so much because their hair is short.

The reason you keep seeing them is because it's very difficult to get rid of every nit. So you are probably killing all the adults but then a few nits will hatch and the problem starts all over again because the medicine doesn't kill all the eggs. And even when you use those little combs it's hard to comb out every single little egg even if the child has a mild infestation. They're just to hard to see, and it's easy to miss one egg that could start the cycle all over again.

This is what I found worked best after much experimentation:
1. Use the ...I think it's called RID. Shampoo their hair. Then follow the directions on the rid bottle. (The RID is a conditioner)
2. A week later use it again--EVEN if you are SURE it's all gone. (There is usually enough in the bottle for a second dose.)
3. A couple days later do the treatment AGAIN. Even if you could swear on your mother's grave they are all gone.
4. Tell her NEVER use someone else's comb or brush, or try on their scrunchy or headband! (This one is the least effective--they usually do it anyway!)
I found this is the best way to make sure they're gone.

You need to clean everything: wash all clothes and bedding, get the lice killer spray for your furniture, and everyone in the house needs to use the lice killing shampoo. If this has happened a few times before, you need to tell the school. It means that one of the students that she sees in school has a problem that has not been dealt with. The school nurse might do a check, and the teacher would send the kids home with head lice warnings for all the parents. A 4th grader coming home with head lice is not unusual, however, if she is coming home like that on a regular basis, you have to deal with the problem where it is starting. Good luck.

You know, I feel for ya. My daughter came home with this when she was young and it was a nightmare. I did everything. The rid stuff...which is way expensive...the bagging of stuffed toys, washing everything in hot water, la ta da ta da. And still had it like you do. So....here is what I did and it worked. You will need one of those lice combs. Have your niece get into the bath tub and wash her hair as usual. Rinse. Then put a ton of cream rinse in her hair. Brush her hair with the cream rinse still in there. Then use the lice comb in her hair. This is much easier with all the cream rinse still in there. You still have to do small parts at a time and layers at a time. My sink is right by the tub and I had the hot water running slowly in there and when I would find one, I'd rinse it right down the drain. I don't know if the regular shampoo killed them or not but it does stun them to where they are not moving so you can comb and rinse. This is much easier than looking strand by strand. And it is much easier on the child also. They can play alittle in the water while you work on the hair. I spent a fortune on the lice shampoo and I don't think it works. So with using the lice comb, you are getting the eggs and live lice. My daughter has long, down to her butt, hair and this is what I came up with that worked. Now you have to do this everyday for awhile. It's not to bad though considering the alternative. Just keep checking everyday to see if there are some missed. I think within a few days we had them all, but I did it longer just to be on the safe side. And, I stopped doing all the extra stuff, like bagging toys and stuff. If a lice gets off a head, they have to find a host soon or they die. All I did extra was to check her pillow and bedding when she got up. It worked for me and I sure hope this helps you, I know what you are going through! Good luck.

As a teaching assistant in elementary school, I see this all the time. First, get a really good lice removal kit, RID is an excellent one. Follow the instructions, and retreat in 10 days. Also, parents must wash all bedding, clothes, etc in HOT soapy water and dry in a VERY HOT dryer. Stuffed animals must be sprayed with RID spray (this can be purchased seperately) and bagged up for 4 weeks. If you can't afford to buy new bed pillows, spray the old ones, put them in a bag for a week, then chuck them in a HOT dryer for a while too. Spray all furniture, mattresses etc, then vacuum them as well as the carpets. But the single most important thing to do is REMOVE THE NITS!!!!!! I see kids every day who come back to school with a head full of nits, even though they have been "treated." Nits will hatch into lice in about 10 days. So they must be removedas well. And recheck, comb, recheck, comb as much as you can. Also, after sweeping floors etc, remove the vacuum bag and dispose of it too!
Hope this info helps! :)

put all stuffed animals in BLACK trash bags and leave outside for 2 weeks. Everything has to be washed a few times,in hot water. shampoo the carpets. Dogs usually won't get lice, not sure about cats tho. Does she share a locker w/ another child that may be bringing it in? Also make sure the whole car is cleaned too. Use Rid lice remover, and , sorry to say, but after washing the hair, each strand has to be checked for nits. Another trick is, to put mayo on hair, wrap in a shower cap right before bed. Wash hair in the morn. After the Lice is finally gone, put a few drops of tea tree oil in your reg.bottle of shampoo, you shouldn't ever get lice again.Good luck!

First of all, get an otc prep such as Rid etc. Follow the directions. There is also a school of thought that promotes putting a thick layer of oil or greasey substance on the hair and putting a shower cap on overnight.
Then the fun begins...environmental control. All stuffed toys and things that cannot be washed put in plastic bags, sealed and left for 2 weeks. All combs, brushes, hair ribbons, curlers etc must be soaked in the Rid solution. All bedding, pillows, coats, hats etc must be washed in hot water and dried. Vaccuum everything and dont forget the car. There is a Rid spray also available for spraying on surfaces that cant be washed. Most schools will require you remove all nits (hence the term nitpicking) from the hair shaft, before the child is allowed back in school. Discourage your niece from borrowing combs, hats, coats etc from other children. There is a prescription medication (shampoo) Kwell, but most pediatricians are shying away from it due to its systemic insecticidal properties. hth

You can buy lice killing solutions at your local chemist. There is many to choose from but you have to just pick one and see how it goes. You can also buy a thing called a robi comb, it is an electronic thing that you run through your hair which kills the lice. I hope this works

Lice die very quickly, but they also reproduce very quickly. You don't need to exterminate your house or anything, they can't live in your carpet because I believe they need blood to eat, that's why they bite on the head, but talk to your Dr about how to effectively kill them all so they can't hatch more eggs on your neice's scalp. Good luck!

you have to wash them in a special detergent to kill the eggs, and the adult lice.try adding olive oil to your nieces' scalp..that will make it hard for the lice to reproduce. it prevents the adult lice from laying the eggs in the hair shaft.
