About 8 months ago I went to my dentist because my crown was loose. He said there was decay and he drilled it off and gave me a brand new crown a week or so later, since he said he had to drill so deep he thought there was a possibility I needed to get a root canal done on the tooth. A little bit later a small pimple like thing developed directly under the tooth so I went back and he said I needed to get a root canal done (no pain.) Anyways since that time I have moved and just in general have been busy. Today I called up another dentist (closer to me) and said I needed a root canal. She took some x-rays and said that there was decay under the crown and that I would need a new crown along with a root canal. I explained the crown was about a year old but she said it didnt matter. Anyways that didnt really sit well with me so I told her I would think about it. But is this possible? The crown isnt loose or anything so how could there be more decay. Is this possible?

yes, I have a similar problem, have two teeth that have decay under the crown just at the gum line.

IT MAY INDEED BE POSSIBLE THAT THERE IS DECAY UNDER THE CROWN. I CANNOT ANSWER YES OR NO FOR YOU SINCE THIS IS OVER THE INTERNET, HOWEVER THE SIGN THAT THERE IS A PIMPLE MEAN THAT THERE IS ALSO AN INFECTION THERE. A ROOT CANAL SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE BEFORE THE FIRST CROWN TO PREVENT THIS PROBLEM. THIS CROWN WOULD NOT FEEL LOOSE.
SO..... WHAT TO DO?
FIRST THE ROOT CANAL THEN THE CROWN. MAYBE THIS CROWN CAN BE REUSED AFTER THE ROOT CANAL IS COMPLETED?

Yes, it can happen. Furthermore, if you get a root canal done, you would need a new crown put on anyway. It is unfortunate, but it can happen. A crown does not protect the tooth always from decay...it is generally used to strengthen the tooth so it would not fracture. Trust your dentist. They aren't trying to cheat you.

its possible that your old crown did not fit well and as a result the crown leaked and caused more decay go to this website to find a good dentist, www.aacd.com or call a few dental labs in your area and ask for a referral to a good dentist.

Sounds like your dentist didn't get all of the cavity that was suppose to be drilled off before he put the crown in.....go find a dentist in your area that has an excellent reputation...ask around, even if you have to pay a little more to see him it may be worth it in the end!! Good Luck.

it is possible and anytime you geet a root canal you have to get a new crown. If they change the tooth the old crown will not fit on the tooth again. root canal and crown will run you around 1800.00 us
