Slavery in the bible

What does the Bible say about beating slaves? It says you can beat both male and female slaves with a rod so hard that as long as they don't die right away you are cleared of any wrong doing.

When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB)

You would think that Jesus and the New Testament would have a different view of slavery, but slavery is still approved of in the New Testament, as the following passages show.

Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

Are you stuck on that. Slavery started with Black people. You don't even no that Black people are the chosen people of God. Chosen to teach the rest of the sons of Adam the word of God. The bible clearly tells you that Jesus was black and Alllll his disciples. The only way that you will know that these things are true is in due time. think about it. Black people are the only people that were taken from there land and placed in other lands. No other race of people have ever been slaves. No other people were sold for a pair of shoes or hung from trees. Better get facts before you start talking crazy. Better find out the truth of the whole matter. Black people are the only physical Israel and there is no other.

So what does what you quoted have to do with black Christians? Those verse would apply equally to any of the peoples from Middle Eastern or African, or even Southern European decent. Slavery in that time wasn't about color, it was about people to do the work you either couldn't or didn't want to, and just about everyone was doing it.

Africans had slaves who were Middle Eastern and southern European, Middle Easterners had slaves who were Southern European, Asian, and African etc. Dude crack a good history book.

So Black Atheist, why are you still tied to the leash of slavery in a time when you are free to be your own person? Your inability to move on holds you where you are as sure as a set of iron manacles.

Let go, lift your head upwards, not down in the mud, walk the path only you can make for yourself

You could ask the same question in a slightly different context of white Europeans and get about the same results. The Christianity that was practiced 500-1000-1500 years ago isn't like the Evangelical Christian Religion that's practiced today, even Catholicism has softened and sweetened up it's rhetoric. Black people are like all people that need religion, most of them were born into it the same as whites. Like it or not, in spite of all it's faults and past transgressions the new version of this old religion seems to fill the spiritual needs of those who practice it.

me thinks someone is possibly taking things in new testament too literally..However, if your an atheist, why study the book at all. Your an atheist. Glad you are studying it tho..Got some good stuff in there. Don't have to believe it, but we can learn so much as simple humans by any form of spritual knowledge. Take what you like and leave the rest...Can't do nothing but make you a more enlightened dude on your personal journey....see ya along the way friend....Kevin

you know why the bible says things that atrocious? because it isn't the word of God, it's the word of some guys who wrote stuff (while slavery was still accepted) ... why do people even regard the bible so highly? Although I don't exactly understand the question, these quotes from the bible are about as significant as if spoken by any other human.

The Bible doesnt actively condone slavery, only make provisions for it because WE WANTED TO DO IT. Men may fail, but God doesnt. Jesus came to save all and doesnt discriminate!

There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. -Galatians 3:28

So you are saying to hate is better? The Bible teaches everyone to love your Brother. My Grandparents come from Germany, our family never owned slaves. You are so full of hate you can't think straight. Christians teach love, and nothing but love.

well our ancestor's oppressor's dont own Christianity. The word of god is for everyone to follow, not just oppressors. white slave owners only used certain passages of the Bible to control slaves. but the bible also says theat God is the one and only one who rules over ALL men. even those OPPRESSORS.

i think that you have to remember to whom those passages were written and in what time. they are suppose to be for teaching, that does not necessarily mean that the bible abdicates slavery! it was going on at that time so it was addressed. as for those of us 2day, it is a teaching tool to show that even in a horrible situation, we are to behave as unto Christ!
