Now we require paperwork? It's illegal to not have your paperwork in order.

Because after the the War of Independence, the colonies became the United States of America, and just like every other country began to reserve the right to (later on) begin to set immigration laws and quotas. those who filled out the proper paperwork and within the quotas were "legal". I feel the correct term should NOT be "illegal" but undocumented because that's technically it, people who enter the country w/o filling out documentation and process. Also, in case I didn't answer your question correctly, the old newcomers to the country were the founders (although I hear the European take over of the land from the Native population could be seen as illegal to some people...but that applies to ALL countries in this continent) later on, waves of immigration came but usually "legal" because of the lack of laws and the use of the quota system.

By the way (in response to an answer above ) illegal immigrants come from ALL countries not just Mexico!

We now have an established country and laws governing it. We have to have some sort of guidelines that help us to decide how many people we can handle flowing into our borders and some way of knowing who exactly is here. The world has changed and laws have adapted.
And by the way, All newcomers are NOT considered illegal, and I'm getting very tired of people getting immigrants and Illegal immigrants confused.

When the first people came they werent considered illegal because there wasnt a decent government and the country that controlled us back then (I think it was England) encouraged new-comers. Now we are over populated and there is a strong government.

It's called a LAW. Familiarize yourself with it and the others we must abide by in the USA. Anyone breaking THAT law can be deported.

We didn't have laws when the first Europeans came to the USA. THEY are the ones who formed our government, voted, made changes and passed LAWS. One of which is the law against illegally entering the USA. Love it or leave it.

Newcomers who don't break the law to come or stay here are NOT considered illegal. Only those who break the law are illegal.

The first people broke no law. When we were less crowded we had no laws to break, as well. When we didn't pay for education of poor people and for other services, it might not have been stealing to come illegally. However, things have changed.

In the old days, when a group of people came to an inhabited area, either the natives killed the newcomers, or the newcomers killed the natives. The later happened in America.

That's just how things were in the old days. For the most part, immigration is different now.

The written laws have changed, but the same HUMAN laws apply. Ever since the beginning of time, humans have been on the move. Immigration has always been a global process, concerning eeach and everyone of our ancestors. Calling today's immigrants illegals is only done by hypocrites who choose to fort how they came to be in this country. Shame on them!

EASY QUESTION so far. Hey high-schooler the first immigrants came here without breaking any laws on the books.

The people that are draining the pocketbooks of millions of taxpayers every April 15th sneek into my country without proper documentation.

They feel in my opinion that it is their GOD given right to bybass the immigration and naturalization officals and the rules.

Because there came a point when rules and laws were put into effect that are necessary for the security and well-being of the United States after a society has developed.

when the first people came it wasnt' a country under laws, under a constitution nor under a bill of rights.

today those such documents exist and clearly state what is legal and what is illegal.

to undermine even one law undermines all laws and makes the entire concept of laws, borders, rules and government obsolete.

are a few mexicans really worth ripping up the very founding papers that allowed you to have all that you have?

if they just go through the proper process we'll welcome them with open arms as we do with all those that come in the proper way.

to say our way is stupid or lame....think of how nice we are. other countries, most in the entire world, will shoot you dead for crossing the border illegally. no questions, no stopping you, just shoot to kill.
