It's a complex question. The U.S. rejected European monarchy, so status to some degree came from your job and how successful you were. As Calvin Coolidge said, "The business of the United States is business." The U.S. was also blessed with a great deal of natural resources--oil, iron, other metals, forests, great farm land. We were also lucky to have immigrants. Some would say the best and most energetic people from other countries were the people who had the gumption to pick up and move to America. Finally, for much of our early history, we were not involved in foreign wars. We also did not waste our energy building a colonial empire--that is unless you think of Western expansion as colonialism.

The US is bankrupt, but the world's faith in the US has allowed us to keep spending IOUs for a long time. As for powerful, there were a bunch of little things, from giving money to other nations either directly or by allowing access to our economy, to putting our soldiers in lots of other countries, who took our Americanism with them and shared with the natives.

The US is built on a sturdy foundation, by our early ForeFathers. Hard work, taxes, honesty, Good Government, Christians, Love for the Fellow man, Emmigrants who came and were proud to be a legal American. Freedom, Good Banks and Business people. Good Planning. Freedom of Church. We have had to fight for our Freedom. Every tom , dick and harry , has tried to invade the American soil. We have had Foreign Trade, run by wonderful Business people. FARMERS. All Types of FARMERS. Potatoes, grain, beef, sheep, swine, turkeys, chickens, horses, Corn, Oats, Barley and Wheat. Yes, America has worked hard. They did it the honest way. And it all was done, by Legal Emmigrants. God Bless America.
