Did you preheat the oven? Sometimes if the oven isn't preheated the outside will get baked quicker w/out the insides being able to catch up.

Sounds like the oven was too hot or the pan was too small for the amount of batter that was in it. But you could get some pointers from your mother-in-law

Tuna Melts 2 tins of tuna, 2 tablespoons of pickle relish, 1/3 cup of mayo or miracle whip, 1 stalk of celery finely chopped. Mix all together and put on 4 split english muffins = 8 slices and top with slices of cheese and bake in a 400 º F oven for 15 minutes until the cheese melts. Tuna Noodle Casserole Cook a package of egg noodles in boiling salted and oiled water on medium heat, stirring frequently until it is al dente, drain the noodles and put back in the pot, add 2 tins of tuna plus 2 tins/cans of cream of mushroom soup. Put into a casserole dish, Top with crumbled potato chips and bake at 350 ºF for 30 minutes while you make veggies and dip to go with it. Tacos Hard taco shells - 3 or 4 per person 2 lbs of ground beef - browned in a skillet or in the oven - stir frequently to break it apart 1 package of taco seasoning 1 head of lettuce - washed and shredded 2 or more cups of salsa 12 ounces of grated cheddar or monterey jack cheese 2 cups of sour cream Put the cooked and seasoned ground beef in the taco shells and put lettuce, salsa, cheese and sour cream on each one to taste - can put all the ingredients in different bowls and let people construct their own taco. Burritos - buy large flour tortillas - they come in packages of 10 or 12. buy 2 packages and see how far they go. They are good as leftovers the next day as a snack or for lunch. Same recipe as above but add a large 28 ounce can of refried beans to the beef taco seasoning mix and the cooked ground beef but roll a cup of the mix and a sprinkling of the grated cheese inside each burrito and bake them in the oven at 400ºF for 15 minutes. To fold them up put the filling in the middle, fold over the right and left side part way and then the top and bottom side and place them seam side down on the baking sheet. Serve them with the extra salsa, lettuce, sour cream Lasagna - check out the recipes on the sides of the boxes, they really work well.: Italian Sausages in tomato sauce with Penne Pasta 2 lbs of Italian Sausages 2 x 28 ounce tins of Diced tomatoes 1 pound of penne pasta or rigatoni or fusilli(spirals) Method: 1. Put the tomatoes in a large cooking pot that has a lid. Bring to a boil and add the Italian Sausages turning down the heat, for 30 minutes, stirring once in a while. The Italian Sausages will add their flavour to the tomato sauce. 2. Cook the pasta in boiling salted water - the package says how long to cook it. Drain the pasta and add a scoop of the warm tomato sauce to it back in the cook pot and stir so that it doesn't stick together. 3. Serve each person some pasta with 2 sausages and some sauce and have some extra parmesan cheese to put on top. SHAKE AND BAKE CHICKEN OR PORK CHOPS Buy 1 cut up chicken for every 4 people - if you have 2 chickens then you can have some cold chicken for the next day for chicken sandwiches. Buy 2 pork chops for every person. You can also buy salads all ready to eat in bags. Buy bags of oranges and apples and bunches of bananas for each week. Buy a bag of salad for each day. Shop on Sunday for the whole week and then you can have an idea what you are going to make. Get your Mom to buy a Crock Pot or a slow cooker and then you can make stews, chili con carne, BBQ or teriyaki ribs or chicken. They have cookbooks with them and they are really nifty, You can prep the food the night before and put the ingredients in a ziplock bag in the fridge and in the morning you can pour it out of the bag and into the crock pot and put it on Low for 8 hours and when you get back from school, make mashed potatoes or rice or noodles or pasta and the crock pot will have made the main dish. good luck... YOU CAN DO THIS... get your siblings to assist by peeling potatoes, setting the table, washing the fruit and making the salads and doing dishes. Rachel Ray has a good cookbook and there are cook books out there with 3 and 4 and 5 ingredients recipes. Take Home Economics in School so that you can get some kitchen skills and then Cafeteria class in high school to get even more skills and a meal too! Remember to always wash your hands when handling food, before and after you handle raw chickens and meats too, when you pat your pet, when you sneeze or cough and before you sit down to a meal. Let us all know how you are doing!
