Here are some of my essential rules for a first date:

1) Don't be pretentious at all, just relax and be you.
2) Be well mannered. Good manners are always attracitve.
3) Be prepared. Make bookings where necessary to ensure a table at a restaurant or seat at a show.
4) Be friendly and ask her about her self. ie. "How long have you worked at......?" or "Tell me something about what you do in your spare time.?"
5) Make genuine compliments. If she wears her hair in a nice way, or wears a nice outfit do make a nice comment about it. But do try to compliment her intelligence, creativeness, or other aspect that is not to do with looks.
6) Do just pay for everything on the date. If she insists on paying then it is okay to step back and allow her but don't ask "shall we split the bill? " that is just too tacky. (Many women will insist on paying at least for part of the bill but be ready to pay anyway)
7) Do drop her at the door if you are driving her there and home. Make no move to enter her home. Instead just thank her for her cmpany and tell her you will call again soon.
8) Do call her again. Even if you do not intend to take her out again. Do call and say hello.
