First, do not listen to smi. From his first statement it is obvious that he knows very little about camcorders. He has mini dv confused with the old vhs"c" tape. Mini dv is much better quality than vhs"c" or mini dvd. The new hard drive camcorders may be better but there is no good software yet. I would go with mini dv, which I just did after doing a lot of research.

mini dv is just a small black square kind of thing that you just put into a vhs tape. a dvd camcorder is when you record directly onto the dvd. this is much better because later you dont have to convert vhs to dvd.

jvc is better than sony in its camcorder line. i highly recommend the everio line from jvc it is the first hardrive camcorder line in the market rite now and it can record up to 37 hours of dvd quality video on a hard drive without tapes or disks. there are 12 everio models with the lowest base price being $600 and highest being $1800.

Good luck finding a nice camcorder

Mini DV is the way to go. The other methods of recording such as DVD or Hard drives compress the video so you automatically lose video quality. Also if your hard drive on your PC crashed and you didnt make a back up all your video is gone. At least on a tape you have a copy that does not degrade over time.

i would go for the mini dv, so that way you don't have to worry about scratching the DVDs, the dvs are like miniature VHS tapes. i dont really think VHS is going out any time soon.

i am not sure, but you can probably find out more, on Eopinion, or epinion.com. i think it is a rating done by consumers on all sorts of electrical items and things like that. or sometimes the computer magazines rate cameras, or try consumers guide.
