.i have always wondered....

first- i know that range balls are made up of crappy material....nothing close to the pro v1s that i usually play but...how much do they really affect your distance on the range

second- the range that my club offers is only mats...which sucks.. and again my question is...does practicing on grass have greater benefits than mats

and finally- how many balls is too many balls.. to hit...because i heard tiger practices up to 14 hours..obviously all is not hitting...but still...vijay hits 1000 balls...before and 500 after a round...for the mere mortal player...how many balls are too many balls

THANK YOU GUYS AND GIRLS for answering

I used to work at a range, handicap 3.
The balls dont affect distance too much. Because they are rock they will go far, but the accuracy is massivley affected. Eg if you draw your pro v's, then the rocks will just straighten out as there is minimal spin, or when the dimples ware, then they can go in any erratic direction.
Practicing on grass has much more benefit- go to a pro tourney and you wont see a mat in sight. The main thing is, is that it is harder off a mat, every shot should be near perfect contact, as it is simulating a tight lie. Also you will not get good feel.
There is no such thing as too many balls- in theory the more the better as it is all about muscle memory. But the most important thing to remember is that you can have too much practice. If you start hitting bad, you will feel bad and hit millions to put it right- this is wrong, all you will do is ingrane bad habits into your swing. This is why its important to go with someone who is as good/better than yourself, who can tell you where you go wrong so you can put it right straight away, rather than ruin your swing.
Good luck!

grass is better than mats. Lee Trevino once said that mats can be deceptive, as if you hit behind the ball the clubhead can bounce into the ball giving you a decent hit that wouldn't get hitting off a fairway.

How many balls to hit. Depends on what you want to do. If you just want to keep you swing in check, then 30odd balls will suffice. Something you want to work on, then anything up to 120. Tiger and Vijay are pros, they are looking for perfection, I wouldn't pay too much attention to what they do. Weekend golfers would get more benefit from playing practice rounds and/or working on the short game & putting, hence I wouldn't over indulge on the range.

Distance? Well depends on the type of range ball you are using. Some give similar distance to a TopFlite, others are a softer ball, which will be 10% or so shorter than your normal ball. I know this coz the range I attend has two types of range ball, a TopFlite and some regular soft range ball - there is about a 10% difference between them. Of course older more worn balls won't travel as far as a newer ball.

It relies upon on 2 issues one million) How previous are the balls? 2) What style of condition are the balls in? If the balls are over 5 years previous there's a competent hazard that they don't look to be in the "perfect" of shape, the balls get wiped out whilst they're hit thousands of circumstances plus the cart that selections up the balls off the variety motives injury as nicely. The extra moderen the ball the further it is going to bypass. Ask somebody on the pro save how previous the balls are, in the event that they are asserting something like 5 or 6 years previous i could come across a place the place the balls are in basic terms approximately 2 years previous. there is likewise a huge diffrence between the effect of the club against wood and the effect of the club against rubber. maximum utilising variety's have tees created from rubber that could reason the ball to not bypass so some distance as they could with a wood tee. additionally the mats at a utilising variety are plenty diffrent then grass which motives some diffrental in the gap the ball travels. i could attempt to discover a utilising variety that has an area the place you could hit off of the grass and the place you need to use you'r own tees. desire all this tips helps, TigerWoodsFan.
