At the time that the Atom bombs were dropped on Japan, the European theater was "closed." Dropping one on Germany at that time would have been pointless/senseless. There is much debate on why we needed two bombings on Japan. However the lives lost due to these bombings was far less then we predicted if we had invaded the island.

Because many of the countries surrounding Germany were allies. Japan is an island. And that Germany surrendered in May 1945. Japan was bombed in August 1945.
Japan was offered surrender, but refused.

Some people doesn't seem to know about the truth in bombing of the Pearl Harbor.
Japan sent a message saying they will "attack Pearl Harbor, be prepared"
They also mentioned when.
The Americans knew that they got a message from Japan but they couldn't understand the code, it had some sort of error on the signal.
Instead of asking Japan what it was, they ignored it.
The Americans admitted that after the war was over.
Until then they said it was uncalled for and it was a cheap shot.

It wasn't quite ready in time to be dropped on Germany plus US, British, & Russian troops were so very close to taking over all of Germany that dropping an atomic bomb on Germany wouldn't have helped much plus US troops weren't making the final assult on Berlin (the Russians were) so if US troops weren't going to be dying no need to use the US atomic bomb.

Truman weighed the risk of U.S. soldiers losing their life in battle in taking Japan vs. dropping the bomb. Japan was given plenty of warning, but refused. In the end, Truman choose U.S. life over its enemies life.
Not an easy decision - What you should also ask is, why did the Japan leader refuse!
We easily forget that the other side is also making decisions.

Dear friend,
all the above answers are correct, but they missed out some thing:-.
1: japan was the most powerful wall of the world war. it had shown it's threat to countries like china and russia.
2: USA used to be a part in WW II by indirectly supply arms and ammunitions to the allies before 1944, but it never took part in the war..... suddenly on about 12 december 1944...the japanese planes bombarded the pearl harbour of USA without any warning of attack. One of the biggest ships of USA was destroyed, the port was devastated and around 236 army mens and civilians were dead. (the wrecked army ship still is there showing it top fleet as a memory).
3. the undeclared attack was a serious threat to american security and esteem. it unconditionally had to push itself in war in order to save its allies and their money and to take the revenge.
4. soon the germans were defeated. USA asked japan to surrender, but it refused....... why would japan surrender....they were still powerful.....they do or die men.
5. USA wanted to test the atom bombs and so japan was the only target. they knew the consequences to some extent and so chose some of the ancient cities of japan nagasaki and hiroshima. it also made them take the revenge. and it did not warn the japan of the bomb. anyway......most american congressmen too did not know about the decision. the pilot who dropped the bomb is said to have gone mad seeing what he had done.
after all, war gets no profit.......but it does teach a lesson. USA realsied it mistake and vowed never to use them again though they didnot help japan recover from it to a large extent.
hope you are convinced.
