shingles is in the herpes family of viruses. (not all herpes is sexually transmitted, fever blisters and chicken pox is also in the herpes family) once you get a virus, you will always have it. you may not ever have a flare up again, but you will always have the virus, and always have the chance of getting shingles again. hopfully the experience wasn't bad for you, i know they can be ruff. best thing is just be aware of the signs and symptoms, and know what medications/treatments you need in case another flare up occurs.

If you've had chicken pox or shingles you will always have the virus, which is called varicella zoster.

People who've had or have shingles had chicken pox at one point in their life. This could have been a very mild case that went unnoticed or a full blown "get out the oven mits" case.

The virus was never killed by your immune system, rather, it went dormant. There it sits sleeping in your body for many many years until conditions are right for it to take over once again, only the second time around it manifests as shingles.

Not everyone with the virus will develope shingles though. It commonly occures in the elderly, women more so than men, and older people who may be under a lot of stress, which lowers the immune system.

For shingles to be treated properly the outbreak must be identified and the person must be put on anti-viral medication within three days of the initial outbreak. A person with an active case of shingles can transmit chicken pox to a person who has never had it.
