I've recently come out of a psychiatric unit, having tried to commit suicide. My Psychiatrist hasn't diagnosed me with anything yet. I think I am confusing him with my long list of symptoms, experiences. He seems to one day think I have Bi-Polar, and other days a Personality Disorder. I'm ordinarily not bothered about labelling myself, but if I am to be treated, surely I should know what I am being treated for ? My medication doesn't seem to be having much affect. Not sure that I can function for much longer with these constant changes in mood and feeling. Is this common amongst pre-diagnosis patients ?

First, you aren't alone in how you are feeling, and I have empathy for you. Adjusting medications, be it for mental illness, hormonal purposes and even blood pressure purposes is an art, not a science. Each person is different and your doc is probably trying to sort through the information you have given him to find the best starting place. Try to focus on which or what feelings you have the most... mood swings, mania, depression, etc. and maybe help him find a starting point. You really have to communicate with him, and let him know that you are beginning to doubt being functional without starting some sort of treatment to get you back on track. It's hard to be in limbo, and very frustrating to know how you are, but your mind just isn't cooperating.
Don't think a thing about your diagnosis being a label. I was diagnosed with Clinical Depression about 15 years ago, even though I was never depressed or suicidal or had any of the depression part of the condition. I just wanted to smack everyone I saw, couldn't sleep... all the anxiety part of the condition.
Hang in there, and get back with your doc as soon as you can. In the mean time, if you feel you just can't take it anymore, make the phone call, even if you call 911, to get yourself some preventive help.

You sound like me a little. I don't know if there is anything wrong with me. I thought that I probably have bipolar disorder or that I'm a little stressed out. Medication takes a while for it to take affect and sometimes it can worsen your emotions. A quick fix for me is to do something exciting, something different, something intense. These days I do positive things... intense running, paint, watch a up lifting movie, listen to rock or opera. Change my appearance. For me it has to feel intense. Can you answer my last question? Do you think I'm bi-polar?

MMM pre-diagnosis is tough because you want to get on with the treatment that is going to (hopefully) make you feel better.

I think, though, that you should dicuss your concerns with your health care professionals - tell them about your medication problems.

Best of Luck, xxx.

I've been writing on nutrition and health for 30 years. Mental/emotional problems are often caused by underlying nutritional ones - e.g. magnesium or zinc deficiency. See on my web site: http://www.foodforthought.org.uk/specific_probs.htm#Mental - then follow the links for more information. Hope the info helps

I really wish that I could give you some good ,practical advise ,as it sounds like no one is doing much to help you. Would it not be possible for your GP to refer you to some one who knows what they are doing and give you the help that you need? I do hope you get well soon.
