I think it's a matter of preference. Do you like your food salty, or spicy? If salty, then go ahead and put salt in the 3 holed container.
Have you ever looked at the difference in hole sizes in salt and pepper shakers at restaurants? There is usually one that has smaller holes than the other yet the same number of holes. The smaller holed container seems to always have pepper in it. Well, i would appreciate it if every restaurant would start putting the pepper in the bigger holed containers. It's hard to shake out the pepper fast enough when they are in the small holed containers. I usually end up taking the cap off and pouring it on instead. Maybe there is someone out there willing to go on a mission to switch all the tops. Maybe me...since i even had time to write all this.

There are no coincidences, and it is not a coincidence that one shaker has just one or two holes and the other has three or more. Pepper is coarser than salt, so the salt goes in the one with fewer holes and the pepper in the one with more holes. There are a few shaker manufacturers that label each one, and in every case the few holes is the salt shaker.

3 holes for tyhe salt 2 for the pepper. Oh yes & if somebody asks for 1 or the other always pass both. My Mom used to say that's because they're best friends and 1 would get lonely without the other.

The one with three holes the pepper goes in the one with two holes. Pepper has a stronger flavor then salt so it is used more moderatley in cooking dishes. I switched to salt and pepper grinders, because the peppercorn and sea salt has a better taste, and it is less confusing. Hope this helped some. Happy Thanksgiving (tomarrow).

Salt goes in three holes, Pepper in two. It's so not too much pepper comes out, since pepper is generally enjoyed in smaller quantities than salt. Who wants to shake for a half hour to get the right amount of salt?

Salt 2 pepper 3. Pepper comes out slower so it needs more holes.
