I think you've made a good choice, all things considered.

The "kit" lens is a decent lens optically, but you might want to upgrade to the Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens for a bit more range and a LOT more durability. If you have the money in your budget, you can start out with the 18-200 VR lens, although it costs more than the D50! When you are ready to add lenses, the sky is the limit with Nikon, and this is the reason I say it's okay to get this as an "entry level, professional DSLR." I own a D200 and a D70s and my wife has a D50, so I am speaking from experience. There are obvious differences between the D200 and the D50, but it's not too far below the D70. I'd definitely consider the D50 before the D40, if you are looking for pro-level stuff in the future.

Yes. I personally own and use a Nikon D50. It performs superbly. I have just ordered a Nikon D80 I will be interested to see how that goes in comparison.

I started out as an amateur but have now sold a few photos and I am looking to do more with my photography and even so I am still not looking to upgrade to say a D200 (equivalent to 20D/30D) yet at all. The D50 has been so good to me that I am keeping it for a while.

If you buy one, go through the menu and turn of all sharpening and color enhancement etc.

I bought Canon 350D which was (until 400d) thought to be the best entry level DSLR but the lens is not as good as Nikon or Sony. However the body is great and you can add any lens you like when funds allow. Not sure 400d really is that much better 10MP and new cleaning system really slows it down apparently.

SKS rifles are the cheap 7.62x39 rifles. Like others have said, the going rate seems to be around $300 to $400. I don't even think you can find a used Mini 30 for less than that. The good news is that from what I can tell on gun auction sites, the SKS is finally out of panic prices. A month ago, I saw Norinco rifles selling online for $800+. You won't have to deal with that now.

keep in mind that if the camera is out of your budget then many of the decent lenses are too... before you decide on a camera also look at what lens you need
