The technical term is gastroenteritis. I believe this has to be the second most common medical misconception: although it's traditionally called "the flu" or "stomach flu", it actually has nothing at all to do with influenza. It's generally caused by a virus, bacteria or parasites. Influenza is a viral illness that demonstrates a hacking dry cough, high fever and severe body aches. There is an effective vaccine against influenza, but not for adult gastroenteritis. The first most common misconception? That a person gets a cold or influenza from getting chilled. Remember- especially during the holidays, when we're with lots of people--- wash your hands frequently. :-)

It can be everything from influenza to gastroenteritis to food poisoning.

The problem with those symptoms is they cover a wide range of ailments.

Usually the 24 hour flu (vomiting, etc.) has more to do with what you ate (such as undercooked chicken or beef) and your body reacting to it than it does some actual kind of outside illness.

When you have stomach flu, you may have one or more of the following symptoms:

* nausea
* vomiting
* stomach cramps
* diarrhea
* mild fever
* fatigue
* chills
* loss of appetite
* muscle aches.

The illness may develop over a period of hours, or it may suddenly start with stomach cramps, vomiting, or diarrhea.

Gastroenteritis, if it is viral, then viral gastroenteritis, or GE for shorthand lingo among doctors.

Where I am from, we say we are sick. I know that does not help. But we try not to mention the unmentionables if you know what I mean.
