Does shortening really expire?

I have some vegetable shortening that says "Best By 05/02/06" Think it's safe to use? I don't wanna go to the store the night before Thanksgiving at 8 pm! :) THANKS.

Also check the color and consistency - if it is bad it won't be white and will be thicker (along with the really bad smell).

Does it SMELL RANCID? If it does, then yeah, it's bad.
