I have a 1993 Ford Taurus that I am fairly sure has a bad harmonic balancer. I've never replaced one before. Is it a pretty difficult job to do or best left up to a mechanic? I would like to do it myself to save money, since I would have to have the car towed to a shop. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

No it is not hard. The hard part is getting the bolt off.
Here is how. First find a socket that fits the nut.
Next be sure the socket it a 1/2 .
Next remove the coil wires.
Ok put the socket into the 1/2 breaker bar.
Not put the breaker bar against the frame so when the harmonic balance turns it does not turn the breaker.
Now bump the starter or turn the key 1 time. The starter will turn the motor and the nut will come loose.
Now Try and pull the balance off, Sometime it comes off easy and sometime it comes off hard. If it will not come off, go to auto zone and rent the harmonic Balance puller. Once it comes off replace it and put the new one in place and tap on with a hammer. Not put the bolt back in and while holding the balancer by hand tighten the nut.
That is it.
Hope this helps you

Its not that hard to replace.First you need to take off your radiator, pull the grill ,it will give you more room to work with. Then un fasten the bolt on the crank shaft. But on the lower pully there will be three bolts that fasten the pully to the balancer.take out your three bolts....I can't remember what size the bolt is but it is either a 7/8 in.are a 15/16 in.undo that center bolt on the crank. The balancer should slide right off.If not you can borrow a puller from Auto Zone....while you have it down that far change the oil seal on the timing cover housing. ....Then put it all back together. You will save your self about $375.00 by doing it your self.also get some very fine imery cloth and shine up the crank where the oil seal is.That way you will get rid of any burs, are flat spots.

The Harmonic Balancer is the small flywheel at the front of the crankshaft. It has the timing marks on it. If that's cracked or damaged, it's going to fee round 3 or 4 hundred money to replace it.

Take it to your local dealer for an accurate diagnosis. Removing the radiator and grill do nothing for you on a fromt wheel drive car.
