Start your search at dogbreedinfo.com

There is a small test there that will ask questions about your lifestyle and the committment you are willing to put into grooming/exercise/training your dog. It will list numerous breeds that might fit into your home easily.

Also, you can search by size/breed/coat style, etc.

This site is just a starting place, though. Once a few breeds have caught your eye, research them more thoroughly. Go to their national breed club site. Go to a few Rescue sites for the breed. Learn more about the negative traits as well as the positives. ALL breeds have negative traits, to some people. Find out if you are willing to live with them.

Research the inherited diseases that the breeds are prone to. ALL breeds have genetic flaws, and you want to be able to know what to avoid.

Then contact the Rescue groups for the breed you choose. Ask them more questions. You might find just the dog you are looking for with them. If you choose to go with a breeder, though, ask Rescue for references for a quality breeder.

PLEASE don't buy from a pet store. Pet stores, each and every one, get their pups from puppy mills. The workers at the pet store might try to feed you a line of bs, saying that the pup comes from a 'local' breeder, but a few minutes research will prove them to be liars. There is a good chance that any pup you get from a pet store has parents living in miserable conditions. Everytime someone buys a pup from a pet store, they condemn the parents of that pup to have another litter to replace the store's 'stock'. Look up puppy mills on any search engine and find out more about these horrific places.

Good luck!

RESEARCH! There are plenty of websites that help you look into each breed, their charcteristics typical of the breed, their health issues (ALWAYS take that into consideration because you will need a savings put back for vet visits in case of emergencies), and what dog would best fit your needs. Petfinders is a great place to start.

You need to research the different breeds. Go to the AKC website to learn more info about them. You can also go to a shelter and look at all those sad faces there and maybe you will find one that will be perfect for you.
