Looking to trace my GG Grandfather Diego Genovese born 1840 from Messina, Italy. I'm really trying to track down what part of Messina he comes from as there are 108 towns in the province! He emigrated to Liverpool in the 1860's but I can't for the life of me find out what ship he came over on, he was a mariner by trade so I am assuming that he worked his passage over rather than being a paying passenger (although this is only an assumption!) I have trawled passenger lists but to no avail... can anyone help?

Thanks Rustskipper!

I've already searched most of the sites you have mentioned and had people I know look at various records over in Italy - it's really got me stumped because trying to narrow down 108 towns in Messina is a nightmare of a job! Thanks for your answer though, it's much appreciated!

Hey WitcheyWoo,

I looked in Family Search, did not find Diego. If you cannot find him on a ship, perhaps you can go to Italy sites and look for possible towns and relatives. My thought is, go to the source of his birth, and get records there. That is a lot of research. Family Search give hundreds of Genovese in numerous locations in Italy. See which towns are in Messina, eliminate the others. Then, you have narrowed your list down a little.

In Italy, you can get birth records via the Embassy. So, you could try that approach also.

Here are some Genovese from Messina, maybe Oliveria is a good place to look:
1. Antonino GENOVESE - Ancestral File
Gender: M Birth/Christening: < 1895 , Oliveria, , Italy

2. Antonino GENOVESE - Ancestral File
Gender: M Birth/Christening: < 1833 <, Oliveria, Messina, Italy>

3. Carmelo GENOVESE - Ancestral File
Gender: M Birth/Christening: 20 Nov 1859 , Oliveria, Messina, Italy
