My family is about to expand, and we've decided that our two four-passenger vehicles will not cut it anymore. Does anyone have any recommendations for a vehicle that can carry six? Now, I commute 40 miles a day, so gas mileage is important. I also am not into big vehicles. Finally, we take lots of trips. Thanks for any help!

I'm afraid there aren't many six passenger vehicles out there besides minivans and a few SUVs. There are a few European station wagons with a third row of seats, although these may be out of your price range (or older than what you're hoping to get).

Ford used to make a Taurus wagon with a third row of seats, and that's about as small and fuel efficient as modern six passenger cars get. Note that not all Taurus wagons have this seat!

If you're looking at new cars, about the only non-minivan thing out there at a relatively low price would be a Crown Victoria. The good news is that they're pretty reliable and can get around 25 mpg, even if it is something of a boat.

Someone mentioned a Ford Taurus wagon. Oh sob! Sniffle! I loved my Taurus wagon. It did have a third seat--but I don't think it was legal to use as it did not have seat belts. I even remember a sticker in the compartment that stated as such. But maybe it was because mine was older (1989). Possibly the newer ones have the seat belts. You can haul anything in those cars. They are amazing. I bought it for $475. at a police auction and got 80,000 out of it before the transmission went.
Another good choice is a late 90's Mercury Villager van. Another police auction buy. Very roomy, drives and handles like a dream. Length-wise it is not a big vehicle. It is tall enough that I can easily get to the third seat without any difficulty. It is a gas hog though. If you look up "gas hog" in an encyclopedia there is a picture of a of a Mercury Villager van,

Other than mini vans and SUV's, all I know of is Mercury Grand Marquis, Ford Crown Victoria, and Lincoln Towncar. All better mileage than an SUV and a great ride on trips. You'll get 28-29 mpg on any of those on the road. But they're kind of old man cars. All rear wheel drive. Silver Towncar w/ tinted windows is sharp!

Check out the Mazda 5. It is mini-van like, but not as big. It seats 6 but gets better mileage than an SUV or minivan.
