I still get 31 city and 34 mpg on my 97 Jetta GL with the 2.0L engine and I have 208,000 miles.
The diesels are good, but learn about normal maintenance before purchasing one.
Parts are plentiful and you can find a great community here:

A lot of people here sell cars and parts. There are many, many aftermarket and places that buy wrecks for parts. Cheaper than buying new - for example, a VW Jetta taillight is $20-25 and are $50+ from the stealership. Just know the specific part number to ensure it will fit the model you have.
If you can do work yourself, it will save money on most repairs. Look around for VW shops that have true enthusiast there as they will do a better job on repairs you cannot do. Also, buy a Bentley manual for you car as it is the most comprehensive I have seen. Very detailed on all aspects of the vehicle, down to light cover removal and bulb replacement to complete wiring diagrams.
Avoid the automatic transmissions as they are more prone to problems than a 5-speed.
And if you can buy the car outright, the money you will spend on repairs annually will be less than than the a couple of monthly payments on a new car (Unless you need an engine rebuild or transmission rebuild/replacement). But you have to keep the car maintained and don't let major issues go - get them repaired immediately.
Mine still drives like new and handles great.

nicely the jetta has a well-recognized 5 cyl. and the passat is a 6, inspite of the undeniable fact that in case you have been to get the GLI (the rapid jetta) is may be way swifter. The passat and the jetta are comparable nonetheless in terms of velocity. The jetta's 2.5 L engine is probably somewhat much less effective, however the jetta is likewise smaller so this is positioned to apply extra useful. Technically nonetheless, the passat is swifter.

I have an 03 VW Jetta TDI, Automatic, fully loaded, I can easily get 1200 kms to the tank without being skimpy, that means blasting thru the rockies (Alberta to British Columbia, Canada) with the a/c on, and the automatic trans. I have noticed that my mileage actually improved as the engine accumlated more mileage on it. I have never had a major problem with my Jetta, only a faulty coolant temp sensor. Parts are readily available and comparable to other quality car manufacters. The only thing that cost a good shiney penny is the timing belt job.

I just drove my VW Passat on a 4,000 mile trip most of it freeway driving 75-80 mph. The gas milage was 28 -31. It is a 1.8T. In town it gets 18-20. Parts are readily availible and repair isn't any different than any other.

I would choose a GLX model-either Jetta or Passat.
I own a 2002 GLX VR6 2.8L Jetta.
VR6 engine, I get 30mpg highway and 24-25mpg in the city. I'm talking about just Regular Unleaded gasoline-cheaper than Diesel, and yes, they do come in Diesels engine or 1.8Turbo
Very reliable cars, everything comes in standard in the GLX models-Monsoon system-trust me, you won't need a $4000 sound system after you listen to the Monsoon system came in standard; dimmed rear view mirror, heated blue tinted side mirrors with the right side mirror will tilt down when you put the car in reverse(put the switch to right mirror); power seats-driver and front passenger's; heated front seats, standard moonroof; daylight driving; cruise control, tilted steering wheel with sound control buttons mounted; antislip system when you drive in the rain; big trunk-I can fit 2 Gorrila On Wheels boxes(2.5ftx4ft) and 3 medium sized bags; you will even have more space when you collapse the rear seats.
And plus it's realy cheap to maintain these cars-of course as long as you don't abuse the car, like brake real hard, and accelerate real fast after braking hard.
VWs are the cheaper version of BMW, cheaper to maintain..you will never look old driving a Jetta-like others compares Civics for girls, accord for guys...ect...
