I used to be a big Mariah Carey fan. I'm not a fan anymore (I found Rainbow and on to be utter disappointments and discovered Tori Amos, anyway), but lately I've been in the mood for some of her old music, and when I checked out some of her new stuff along with reading about her success, it sounds like she's doing well, but I don't hear all that much about her. She was my favorite singer back during the Daydream and Butterfly albums, and I remember she was really hot. The charts say she's doing quite well, but she actually seemed much more popular back in the mid and late 1990s. Is she still as popular today, or is she doing well but her peak of popularity isn't like it used to be? Just curious. Thanks.

I wasn't trying to rip on her or anything, I'm just curious because it seems she's doing so well yet I don't see her like I used to, i.e. magazines, television, interviews, etc... I know she still gets attention, but she just seemed to be much more in the limelight in the mid and late 1990s, especially during "One Sweet Day." I'm currently deciding on the best answer, since there are a good amount of good answers. Although people aren't sure where Mariah's popularity is at, it is just as big as it ever was. I see her all the time on TV, award shows, magazines, etc. She is at the top of the game right now. Her latest album was the best selling album of 2005 and one of her songs was the biggest song of 2005. Also note that CD sales aren't as good as they could have been (due to piracy and stuff) and yet she is able to sell about 6 million copies in the US. I believe if piracy didn't exist, The Emancipation of Mimi could've been one of her best selling albums EVER. She was extremely popular and the CD and the singles sold well. However, I am a bit worried on how long it will last. Her latest single, Say Somethin', flopped hard along with a couple other "minor" singles (not really released but still hit the charts).
Another thing you want to factor in while considering is she popular is age. Look at Madonna, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, etc. Are they even coming close to Mariah's sales? No. How many female singers in their late 30s/40s or that have been in the singing career for over 15 years have the best selling album and biggest single of the year? Not a lot, if any at all. These days America loves younger female singers and prefers them over the older ones (Look at Beyonce, Britney Spears, Rihanna). So for someone with Mariah's experience to have such huge hits and be so popular after so many years is astonishing.
Like you, I found Rainbow a bit disappointing, and Charmbraclet and Glitter were huge bombs in my book (not just because they weren't well recieved by others). With The Emancipation of Mimi, I find she has some of those meh only okay songs on there but she does add some very catchy songs on there, which is why it became the hit it was. Her tour was nearly sold out half the time. Though some might not recieve Mariah's latest effort as her best work, her immense popularity is indisputable.

One thing that i remember about this singer is her amazing and beautiful voice, if i can say maybe her voice is really a gift from God. So then she have a voice of an angel. Mariah is very popular in almost one decade. And people say that she is a Diva, i think that the highest career she ever have in her music. But she is a human also, sometime she in the top and sometime she is at the downside. But i think her popularity is still in her side. The big fans of her are many, and they still be her fans. Like me until now i keep to follow her music career, i do not care what people say about her, cause i never care what she's doing beside music, i just care her music and voice. Even people will say that her albums so bad, so not attractive or anything like that, i am still her fan. Cause she still keep her music along with her.
And until now she is still a diva.

Mariah Carey is still popular. Do you know that most of the singers in the world admire her. Why? because she is one of the greatest voice on earth. Do you know thay she start singing since she was 3 years old. Her mom taught so much about singing, and now she's one of the greatest voice. You and I are in the same boat. I don't like her latest music as much as her older stuff, either. In fact, sometimes it seems like she isn't as good as she used to be. I'm still going to stick by her as a fan, but I personally think she is trying too hard to fit into this modern style of music, and her voice does better with the ballads and stuff like that. She definitely got her diva status from her older music.

Oh I think she is still very popular.. I went to one of her concerts in Calgary and it was packed with fans.. It wasn't the best concert I have ever seen, but she was very entertaining.. I, like you, was a big fan of hers, then it dropped off over the years. The concert changed my mind about her (in a good way).

Mariah is still popular..Jez bcoz she is not hitting most of her famous notes lately, doesn't mean that she is forgotten...
I love her mid 90's looks and songs...Some of my friends thinks she is trying to compete with Beyonce and other young red carpet girls...
But for me, she is OK, she needed some space and maybe she will surprise us next year with one of her Albums...

Mariah is still popular but not as she used to be. They haven't advertised her as vicously as they used to, probably because of her age. You would be amazed at how the publicity sparked from advertisements "create" the buzz to make the artist.She's doing well and good for her!

Yea she's still popular but i think she should stick with the love songs and try not to comform to the music today...meaning lately she been writing hip hop songs and having people like J.D., snoop dogg, etc perform with her when everyone just loves the old Mariah Carey...

I too used to be a big fan, but now adays when you hear about her they just speak about how down hill she's gone since her break down and all. She hasn't made a "Come Back" she just made an album with one or 2 good songs on it and went back into hiding because people are bored of he rediculous antics. She just doesn't know how to be a lady in public anymore, by the way she acts you'd think she was an attention depived child! Plus, she's too old to be dressing like one of the "youngsters". don't you think! and she does tend to over do it too, i mean her taste has gone from good to TACKY!
