There is only one body with the authority to define true doctrine, and therefore to define false doctrine, the Church described in the Bible as "the pillar and foundation of truth", the one Church founded by Jesus Christ for all mankind, the Church to which He said "whatsoever you bind upon earth is bound in heaven", the Holy Catholic Church.

usually a heresy in religion is a deviated belief from the original true befief .
for instance there was many heresies in Christianity that said Jesus is just a human or Jesus is only devine or Jesus wasn't crucified < Islam > .
or Jesus was married like the new heresy DA Vince code :
it is deviated from the truth and usually any smart christian can differentiate between truth and heresies and the head of church like the pope in the catholic church decide this with the authority given from Jesus and people and the election of cardinals .

Defining heresy nowadays, at least in the U.S., would be difficult. There are just too many religions out there influencing one another, and the beliefs of people. Virtually all of them have a common theme: peace and tolerance for one's fellow human being. A heresy I can really think of right now is the terrorist movement. It commits violent acts against humanity in the name of religion, while it is in fact going against the common theme of peace and tolerance.

Heresy is anything that goes against the clear teachings of the Bible. Many of the catholic doctrines are heretical, like Mary is the intercessor between man and Christ or God, or a priest can absolve sin. These are clearly against Scripture.
To answer your question-the Bible decides. Any church tradition or policy that is a violation of Scripture is heresy.

Well,if you're 555 then I'm 6(sic)6, what's it like to be a heretic? But seriously there is a book that tells us what heresy is, it is called "Webster's Dictionary" and you will find your answer there.Note: "Heresy" comes from the Greek word heresien meaning "to choose".Doesn't sound so bad from an etymological stand -point,everyone likes choices.Raymond T;I think Gnosticism kicks a*s*s! Any religion that believes Jehovah is the REAL devil is right in my book.

You think yours is a true religion. I think mine is a true religion, I am a Gnostic. As a Gnostic i think yours, and all others, are true religions. But only to those who believe and practice what they preach. If a Person says he or she is a Christian and then molests children that makes the religion a bad one for them, but not for sensear believers. This is what makes me a heretic in the eyes of your church. Assuming you are a Christian, and only Christians use that word, I doubt you even know what it means, most people don't, They just know the church tells them it's bad. All it means is that I do not agree with your church. The church invented the word then used it as an excuse to slaughter hundreds of thousands. We Gnostics did nothing to retaliate. So really who was wrong? We who disagreed with the Churches, or your Christian churches who would not let us live in peace? As we see it "To your church we are heretics. To God we are the loyal opposition?" As the celebration of the birth of Jesus comes around let us stop calling each other names and just live in peace.

The same people that have always decided what constitutes "heresy." The leaders of whatever "one n only true church" you believe in. Why on earth would you think that would change?

Heresy is any teaching that goes against or does not agree with scripture, but claims to be scripturally true or otherwise claims to be the Word or a Word of God.

Right now if you are referring to the world events,2Corinthians4:4 shows that the devil is in charge "among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through."
1John5:19 " we know we originate with God, but the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one."
Like you said, there is one true religion today but all that it can do it to help those who are honest hearted and humble learn the truth and make their lives in harmony with God's will in order to be saved when this wicked world is brought to an end in the near future.

Heresy seems to be whatever those who have the greatest influence/power are against. Legitimate interpretations of Jesus' message were dismissed by the early church leaders precisely because of that.
