how to help a friend, a former drug addict to return to normal life?

You don't help them at all. You support them and be there when they need a friend but if you try to do more than that it could be counter productive to their recovery process. It's not suppose to be easy.

If he is old enough to work, you should help him find a job or return to school, whichever is appropriate. Help him socialize with people who are not into drugs. It would also do him good to be an active member of any organization which aim to help people in the field that he is interested in. That way, he is kept busy and take his mind off drugs. Most importantly, introduce him to GOD!

Stay out of his way. I'm a recovering addict with 17 years clean.If you can help him/her get to meetings-- do that.If you get high, the best thing you can do for this person is pretend you never met.The ONLY people who can help an addict are recovering addicts.Sorry, but this is the truth.Your friend has already been told this in treatment.

I think you should go to some meetings with him...they have recovery meetings, you can learn what you can do and then just be there and be a friend.
