Is it possible to develop ADD (attention deficit disorder) or ADHD (attention deficit hyper disorder) after you are born?

I know psychologists say its not and that you are either born with ADD or ADHD or you aren't... But are there any studies proving you cant develop it? Could drug use cause you to develop ADD or ADHD? If you dont know for sure, I'd still like to hear your opinion!

From everything I've read and believe, the jury is still out regarding ADD begin something you have at birth. In fact, there seems to be a great deal of evidence to the contrary. I have heard and seen with a few people I know, that it could be attributed to a highly stressed life, physical trauma or even vaccinations in childhood.

Whatever the cause, there is also evidence that if a parent has ADD their child(ren) have a chance too. So, there is some evidence of heredity too.

Maybe it is both, who knows at this point really? What I do know is that if I were a parent, I'd try all the natural methods to address it before I'd even consider medication. "The ADD Book" by Sears and Thompson addresses diet, biofeedback, etc., which helps many. Natural tonics too, have been shown to assist some (see Native Remedies online).

I can think of several scenarios where such disorders could develop as an adult.

I believe psychological trauma can manifest itself in ADD and ADHD symptoms ... post traumatic stress disorder has so many facets that psychologists are just beginning to identify their complexity.

Brain injury could also trigger previously-unknown symptoms of ADD and ADHD.

Substance abuse can change a person's psychological and physiological status. Chemotherapy can, too.

Exposure to substances like PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon), endocrine disruptors, CFC's, dioxins, carcinogens and various immunotoxins have become part and parcel of our daily lives. Teflon was a known poison when it was developed, but that knowledge was hidden from the public. Plug in air fresheners release powerful toxins while 'freshening' your home. Microwaves change the chemical makeup of your food and the containers that hold it but still people put baby bottles in there without a second thought. Computer monitors contain several pounds of lead and even cadmium, yet they are dumped haphazardly in city landfills.

You bet ... these disorders can develop at any age, depending on exposure to toxins or trauma.

ADHD is still a pretty controversial subject, meaning there really isn't enough known about it to form any definitive. However, there are plenty of adults who suffer from it and are treated for it.
I've seen people say both that it is only a childhood disorder (maybe not manifesting until later in life) and I have also seen articles talking about adult onset ADHD.
So the point is, if you feel you need treatment for it, then seek it.

extremely, there is not any evidence which you're born with the sickness finished-blown, basically a genetic predisposition of coming up it. Having a genetic predisposition for coming up upload/ADHD does no longer mean you will advance the sickness. Environmental components will impression no count number if or no longer you advance the sickness. Environmental components might incorporate (yet no longer limitted to) drugs utilization, antagonistic living house, your relationship with your mom and dad/family members/friends/friends, getting sufficient nutrition, trauma, and so on. that's an hassle-free concept contained in the learn of Biology(i.e. Gentoype + environment = Phenotype) and applies to extraordinarily much all psychological subject concerns. Having a genetic predisposition for a sickness isn't sufficient to make certain which you will advance the sickness. BTW, i've got worked with many Psychologists and scientific Psychology graduate pupils and not as quickly as had I heard them say which you're born with a psychological sickness, basically which you're born with a predisposition to coming up the sickness. What Psychologist(s) advised you otherwise? once you spot him/her/them returned, tell them to seem into the Biopsychosocial sort of psychological subject concerns and are available to the twenty first century for treating it.

I think that ADD and ADHD in children are a way to get the medical world more money. Kids normally have lots of energy and want to run around and play in the mud and scream and talk really fast.

As for adults, I do think it can develop later in life. I think it has to do with whats going on in your life. Like for example if you lost your job and had all this energy all of a sudden, it's probably because you're not doing anything anymore.

Good Luck

i have never heard this theory (being born with it) but i am not an expert, either.
i was educated to believe that is purely DEVELOPED. and in my opinion, affected mostly by what we ingest. if we feed our bodies and brains crap (sugar, refined foods) how can we expect our bodies or brains to function properly?
drug use could definately be a cause as drugs directly affect our brains.
i also believe that these conditons can be reversed tho. start with eessential fatty acids. omega 3 and omega 6.
good luck if this is a personal experience

From what I've read, it's not that you are or you are not born with ADD. But you do have to have symptoms that start when you are young in order to be diagnosed with it. See http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/symptom.htm for a discussion of how to be diagnosed with ADD.

I've never heard evidenc supporting that happening. Drugs can do weird things, I wouldn't be suprised. The brain is a very complicated thing, it is possible that psychiatrists could be wrong. They often change the rules when they find new evidence.
