These are things running in the background on your computer.

Click "start" ......"Run" type in msconfig.

Click "ok"

Pick "startup" tab.

Uncheck what you don't to run that is giving you any icons in your taskbar.

Click "apply"

Reboot computer

When your computer comes back on a box will show up letting you know things have changed. Check the box to not remind you again.

Any applications running in the background, that are putting icons in your taskbar, will be gone because that application is no longer running when you turn on your computer.

This will remove the application icons from running and showing up everytime you turn on your computer.

Some of these other answers are kinda odd.

Just be sure not to turn off your virus scan.

you can hide them by right clicking on the taskbar itself, not the icons and then clicking on properties. then go to notification area where it says show the clock and hide inactive icons. click on customize and then you see a list of icons and you click on an option like hide when inactive, always hide, always show etc.

hope it helps!
