A friend at work said that a Dr told her mother to give her brother peanutbutter on a spoon and it would work to make him less hyper..Have you ever heard of that or anything to calm a hyper hyper child down, instead of medicine.......

Sometimes medication isnt the answer. Medicating hyper behavior is over rated. Unless there is a known chemical imbalance caused by the childs body, then medication is counter productive. A good doctor will avoid prescibing medication for hyper activity until its absolutely unavoidable.

Diet can fix a lot of problems. Especially in hyper children. Processed foods are so broken down and starchy that the body processes them EXACTLY like it does sugar. And everyone knows packaged and boxed foods go hand in hand with a childs diet. Everyone also knows what sugar does to kids.

It makes them hyper.

Boxed noodle mixes, wrapped snacks, anything that comes in a box or plastic and often in a can (even spagetti-o's) is highly processed. Some children are just more sensitive to the broken down processed foods than others, resulting in hyper activity. They've also linked that behavior and that diet with diabetes later in life.

While peanut butter does have sugar in it, natural peanut butter has almost none. I assume this is what the doctor meant, since the protien in peanut butter can really help to calm a child by balancing out the sugar in the system from previous meals.

Good diet, regular exercise, and consistant parenting are often a better answer to hyper children, than simply diagnosing it as ADHD and giving them pills.

I have heard that works...also since most ADHD drugs are stimulants the caffeine in Mellow Yellow (has the highest content of caffeine) and coffee are known to work as well.

Well the kid will be concentrating on eating the PB so he probably wont be jumping around messing up his PB. Thats probably what the Dr. was getting at.

If that works, fine, but please do not be hesitate to use medicines if needed. Talk to your child's doc. Please do not give peanut butter to a child under 2 years of age...most docs prefer you avoid this due to poss. allergy problems...I have seen it happen...children under 2 can DIE in minutes from an allergic reaction to PB. If child is oldre, do , please, consult his doc too. Good Luck.
