A good church imparts truth and knowledge of God and his teachings.
And that helps create better, more loving, tolerant and all around good people. Helps keep those people from the natural selfishness that dominates their psyche. Break from from selfishness and mature into nurturing adults who can also pass the wisdom of God's teachings and raise another fruitful generation.
That is all that matters.
For the record, religion helped define and outline what exactly was to be taught, because a lot of different small groups were inconsistently preaching the word of God. Like college, there are roundtable forums for educators to talk about what needs to be basic education and what that encompasses... they just don't teach random, useless information.
To Etpilot: Where do you think the "Golden Rules" came from? - they originated from the ten commandments!
To Albert says E=MC2 : Jesus and the others were taken care of of through donations and free room and board at people's homes who cared. Today, people prefer to give monetary compensation so that they the priests/pastors may have their own home and necessities rather than have to house or feed them personally.

Who knows what God would think of religion? (and who knows that we should assign gender to God by referring to God as he or him.)
Fundamentalists of all religions seem to think they have a direct line to God. They believe they know what God thinks, and what God's views are on every little thing. And of course, God is always on their side.
There are some basic principles taught by all religions that are useful to human beings in determining what constitutes ethical behavior.
I'm with you, though. People are responsible for searching their own conscience for answers, even if the results conflict with the teachings of their religion. I believe most liberal Christians and Jews do that. Muslims seem less inclinded, but then they take great pride in the fact that their religion has not changed in 1400 years.

Iwe were created with a religiuon. which is believing in God the one and only God. but because people want things to go the way they like they changed lots of things and each person that has good control of people comes up with what he likes. and thats who we came up with all these different kinds of religiouns. so people just need to look for what makes sence and what doesn't and let those who r hard to deal with aside for God to judge them after they try there best with them.

These people that say they know what God thinks are delusional and make me crazy. Who gave them such powers? It all sounds arrogant to me. Organized religion is for people who can't think for themselves. Just living your life by the Golden Rule solves all kinds of problems. I'm with you 100%

He knows. He is waiting for the individual spiritual experience to break through the organizational boundaries. The responsibility rests with the individual. When enough individuals realize this, there will be changes.

i think of its plenty extra significant to have a private dating with God than to easily take place at church as quickly as a week. we could face it, some each and every person is in church for reasons different than worshiping. you could disagree with the pastors attitude on something. You and that i could desire to envision the bible 15 circumstances a bite, and nonetheless have a diverse opinion some particular financial disaster or verse. i think of of the pastors message as conformation quite than the appropriate interpretation.

Bravo!!! Good for you:)
By the way don't you think all of it is for the love of money and the glory of power? and remember,,,power corrupts and religious organizations are very powerful and have the backing of very powerful men and other organizations because it is a game of who controls the masses too.

I believe that all that God wanted was people's faith. He didn't come up with a bunch of mumbo jumbo that if you don't do it, you won't go to heaven. He just wanted people to believe that he is God and he wanted them to love him.

I'm surprised that he hasn't burned down all the churches already. Guess that's just another mystery as to where he is.
