Imagine if you will...Some other country (let's say Iran) has the military might to invade and occupy Washington D.C. and several other major American cities, and it does just that because thier leaders think they have a better way to govern and they want to enlighten us. What do you think the reaction of U.S. citizens would be?

leogirl: I have lot's of ideas for why we're in Iraq, (oil, Haliburton, Apocolypse...etc, things Bush and Cheney don't talk much about) my question was "to those who think we're in Iraq to spread democracy".

m1 a1 and briang: my apologies. Obviously our democracy has done great thing for the Iraqi people. Too bad they're too busy blowing each other up to be duly appreciative.

I think it would depend on the circumstances. Undoubtedly, some Americans would fight , no matter what the intentions of the invaders.
If we had been suffering under an abusive, oppressive, dictatorial regime, and the Iranians offered some measure of freedom, I think they would win popular support among Americans.
If they invaded now, with things as they are, they would face tremendous opposition. We have a pretty good system now, and what the Iranians have to offer doesn't even come close.
I know the point you are trying to make here, but I think you are seeing a false equivalence between U.S. democracy and Baathist rule of Iraq. Our system, whatever it's flaws, at least has a fundamental respect for the rights of the individual. Hussein's system did not. Our system is open to popular influence...his certainly was not. You can't hypothetically "turn things around" without acknowledging this.

It depends, would all of these Bush haters join up with the Iranians? If all Americans wanted to remain Americans we would wipe out the invaders quickly and easily. If the Bush hater faction joined the Iranians, we would still win but it would take a lot longer. The Iranians would never have the support from Americans that America has in Iraq from the Iraqis.

Sir, This question is just like the question "Have you stop beating your wife yet?"... We are not in Iraq to enlighten anyone, nor to occupy them. A recent "USA Today" poll sited that nearly 3/4 of the voting population does not see us as occupying them either... But, your right sir, we should have let the old leader of that country keep the legs of pregnant women tied together and filling mass graves with people who we don't know. So much better that way!!!

Something along the order of Pearl Harbor. Americans would be falling all over each other to enlist. You would see true American pride coming together to defend this great country. You would see America at its' best. We would fight to our deaths.
Are they doing anything different, no.

Name one islamic democratic republic that is not a sham and has a real constitution with something similar to the Bill of Rights in the United States Constitution and I will honor your question with an answer.
You should thank God that you live in a country that allows you to ask such questions as you regularly do without being murdered by government agents like those Saddam sent to killl those who questioned him.

Sorry the shoe wont fit on the other foot! I say let em try. Isn't that what WW1 and WW2 were kind of about. Someone else had an idea of what they thought was best for everyone. It just never seems to work out for anyone who tries to mess with the U.S. or our allies.

Democracy isn't a fungus, dipstick! It's a form of government. The objective of the US is to get these people past dictatorship and into a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Even democracy isn't perfect government, but it certainly is an improvement of that Of Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Adi Amin, Kim Jong Il, Mao Tse Tung, Saddam Hussein, and their ilk!

Exactly. We are two different cultures and to try and force any type of politics or religion on anyone else is totally insane. We need to accept the fact that not everyone in the world wants to be like the US. Trying to rationalize Iraqi society or any other society for that matter according to our beliefs and standards will not work.

Most Americans would go crazy and tell them to get out or else. We're in Iraq because they're sitting on the 2nd largest oil reserve in the world. It's all about money and power. Not helping the Iraqi people.

You really have no clue.
All we did was give the Iraqi people the chance to choose what type of government they wanted.
In 2 UN certified elections and one UN certified referendum they overwhelmingly voted that they desired their present democratic government.
They chose their present government of their own free will.
The people we are fighting in Iraq want to make themselves dictators.
What do you have against the Iraqi people?
