The Association of Train Operating Companies website lists franchised passenger train companies on their home page. It doesn't cover freight though. Or try ASLEF which is the union body who look after train drivers.

National Rail is the consortium of rail companies. National Rail is owned by ATOC. ATOC control all the ticketing in the UK - whereas the train operators control the ticketing PRICES.

There is a list of Train Operating Companies available at www.nationalrail.co.uk

The major Freight Operating Companies are EWS, Freightliner and DRS. There is a freight company called EPS which deal with Eurostar dealing.

We do not have railroad companies in the UK.

The tracks are owned by a Governmant organiation, Network Rail and Train Operating companies operate trains on the Government rails, EWS is the largest frieght operator.
Virgin one of the main passenger operators.
It make no sense and does not work, as a series of crashes proves, Hatfield, Ladbrook Grove, Southall, etc

Early railways have been inter-city. Industrialization had led to a mass flow of folk from the farms to the city. the craze in the direction of city residing led to city railways (Chicago El, London Underground) to advance into rewarding/needed. This allowed denser cities. The steam engines utilized in those railways made incredibly some smoke, human beings did no longer like that. exceptionally in subways like London. So it became needed to impact the city railways.
