I would say values, because not all religions are peaceful, having values guarantees integrity. Ethics I believe are more necessary than having religion. However I do think religion is probably why we have a standard of ethics.

My ethical values are in agreement with my relgious faith. Not in agreement with someone elses religious faith maybe, but if you think about it, Id say most people choose a religion based on what they feel is right and wrong anyway.

I say values and I think even some religious people would agree with the following logic:
Religion without values is worse than nonfunctional, it can lead to serious abuses that we've all heard about.
But values without religion leads to a person who is still upright and trustworthy.

Let's see -

1. A religious person who has no ethics or values

-or-

2. A ethical person who isn't religious.

I'll take #2, hands down.

A

Your question is too theoritical. The "right religion" will not be in conflict w/ Ethics. However, if your theoritical case arise, I'll choose ethics. And, then console myself that my interpretation of my religious beliefs is not in conflict w/ ethics.

By religion I hope you are including my right to call it faith - I'd pick my faith cos it covers both those and ethical values are only for a part of your life, I know so many people who separate their life in to little boxes and act different in every place...

I will pick my faith, cos God helps me treat people consistantly and ethically and also my faith tells me I have to obey the laws of the land (where they don't conflict with the mission of spreading His word)

7
"You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
