Hi! My family is low income (we have internet for my online classes). We took in two stray cats (one male, one female). But we cannot afford the vet bills. Are there programs out there for low income people to get help with spaying/neutering animals?

CF, just so you know. Both cats were not stolen. Both were definite strays. In our county, stray cats are not even taken in by the pound unless you pay to have them taken care of there.

For those of you who are feel we should not be taking these cats in, our alternative is to set them loose somewhere.

We cannot even afford dental bills for our kids so how do you expect us to handle vet care for our cats???

Sorry to sound off, but it's irritating when people tell us we should spend this type of money or not take in a pet. We do the best we can.

You can call 1-800-spayUSA for a low-cost clinic near you. Some humane societies have arrangements with local vets and give coupons for discounts on the surgeries.

Thanks for being responsible and wanting to do this for the strays. It is the best move you can make to ensure their health and safety for the future.

Possibly the RSPCA might help. Go to a few vets and ask if they would be able to let you pay of the bill overtime of give you a discount. You really need to at least get the female desexed really quickly as if you don't you might end up with a litter of unwanted kittens! Look in your phone book or even ask around at the vets as there might be shelters around your area which may do it! I really hope out can find some help. Thank you for taking in those cats :) not only have you saved 2 cats, but also possible many many more which would have been born from them and also teh lives of much native wildlife which would have been killed by them. Our two cats are adopted strays. They make wonderful pets. My boyfriend, a low income student, took them in. The female got desexed because my mum paid for it (she loves cats) and he's currently saving up to get the boy done. Again, thank you! I wish there were more people who would do more then just ring the pound...

Most area's do offer low cost spay/neuter clinics, you just have to call around to find them. My bigger concern would be that generally the spay.neuter of an animal is not the biggest expense, and if something were to happen are you going to be able to pay for the vet? Or even just the maintenance meds they need like heartworm stuff?

depends where you live.. some areas offer this some do not.. call the vets they will know, or call the local shelter.. Also be aware that different vets charge different prices.. Neutering is typically cheaper than spaying but spaying is equally if not more important and I would suggest fixing her first if you can only do one.. make sure its the female
how about helping by collecting pop cans and recyling for cash or doing odd jobs in neighbourhood.. good luck... really people who cannot afford vet bills cannot afford pets.. because it really is a responsiblity and actually a crime to ignore medical needs of pets... if you indeed took in strays you should make sure you report finding them because you can be charged with THEFT if you didnt

Maybe you should consider giving the cats to a local cat rescue if you cant afford the vet bills. Right now, two extra mouths to feed and the cost of care might be too much for your family. Call your local SPCA and see what they offer. They can give you numbers to cat rescues if you choose to give them away.

Yep - here are places out there. First call should be to your local animal shelter - they will be able to give you names, numbers, options. I had a neighbor who was able to get her 2 kittens fixed and given their shots for free by simply volunteering at a shelter for a couple of days. Maybe you can do that.
