I've got one for sale, 86 Mustang SVO turbo, 205 HP stock with 5 speed and performance upgrades, only $4500 :)

A Saab 900 with a turbo could definitely be had for $5000, but you may need to drop another $2000+ within the next 3 years for repairs.

Another option could be a mid 1990's Volvo or a Saab 9000. Older years of the Saab 9-5 could probably be had for $5000, but CR has the reliability of the 1999 9-5 pegged as "not so great", so be wary.

I would definitely look into perhaps a Mercedes C230 Kompressor, but I don't know if any of those can be had for around $5000 as the Kompressor models are rather recent. (98 and later I think; and those are in the $8000 range)

Whatever you decide on, make sure to run a CarFax report to make sure it has not been in an accident, and have a trusted mechanic inspect it.

Mk3 Supra, old old MR2, 944 if you get REALLY lucky. I don't think you will be able to find a Grand National for anything near that unless the owner doesn't know what it is. Why do you want the turbo, just to chip it? All of the cars you will be looking at will be quite old. Age and turbos don't mix. You will probably have to replace the head gasket at a minimum and may have to replace the rings on the pistons. Make sure you do a compression test on any vehicle before handing over any cash (even a "refundable" deposit).

If you want a sporty car do not get front wheel drive, that's just lame.

If you can afford a little more than 5k you can start getting into 90's audis and possible even Mazdaspeed factory turbo miata. If you want to modify it stay away from cars made since '97 as the computer (ODB 2) is much more obnoxious. If you get a pre ODB 1 car things are much simpler.
